I know this happens when your BIOS does not correctly facilitate the HD you're trying to install Windows on. A real pain. Thankfully, I never experienced this.

I imagine that you would need to do something to your BIOS to fix this, but I never play around with my BIOS. I don't have the confidence to do that yet!

I generally just think it a bad idea to play around with BIOS. I know a lot of people who do play with BIOS settings to 'tweak' some things, but on occasion they end up screwing somehting up and needing to reinstall. What a pain!

So I generally just leave the box as is, and only go into the BIOS when I need to activate a new audio card or internal drive (DVD, Blu-Ray, etc.)

You guys are mistaken, adjusting your BIOS has nothing to do with your actual OS installation.

to me BIOS is like my best friend, without it I couldn't overclock.

When you know more about each setting and what it does, it's not at all scary...see it as the option menu of your tv. It may seem overwhelming at first.

Yup. The only bad thing you could do to your bios is a bad flash and most new motherboards have safeties in case that happens.

There's always a reset default settings in case you screw up. Mr Green

Found this one: BFK or this one Tiny-Keylogger. Both free, but the 1st one is open source, so less chances of becoming infected with spywares and trojans. Never tried them.

Just make sure you can uninstall it once you're done with it, because someone else could get you info too. Sweat

Yep. Unless they are used to monitor young kids, I don't really like them either. Even in that case, a lot of more useful tools are available to prevent them from going to bad sites.

We just got back and he bought nothing: too many choices, not enough info.

They've got a crappy selection of PC cases: any color as long as it's black. Shake Head

Cracks me up seeing these other people buying mobos without nary a clue... And they're all on there cellphones talking to someone, trying make a choice. I sure would like to sell these people some Florida swampland.

One guy was getting pissed off 'cause he wasn't getting the right answers to his questions on which mobo to buy. Shake Head

Ah, the joy of helping (or trying to give advice to) someone who doesn't know shit about hardware...it's hard to keep up with hardware too, since a mobo that's really great now can be easily 'end of the line' within a few months. ( like I wanted to order this ASrock mobo with onboard video for mom, but didn't have time to, 3 months later it wasn't being sold anymore)

Yeah, it's very tough.

I'm trying to save my uncle money, but he seems hellbent on buying much, much more than he needs: 2GB DDR2-800 RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo, SATA 300, etc.

Heh, I should give him my PC and have him buy those components for me. Beaten

I guess he probably won't even notice. unless your comp is really crap ;p
but I think he's one of those who fell for the vista trap. I don't see how an average user would need 2gb memory anyway. I only have 1gb myself haha, you'd only need more if you like to play games like BF2.

then again, dual core is the way to go now, it's cheap(er) now and will be sufficient for years to come. even though there are quadcores available now, the problem is that there's virtually no software being written that benefits from more than 1 core, let alone 4. (well ok, it's great for folding..)

the problem with PC's these days is that cpu and ram are so fast these days, but the other components can't keep up or are not optimized to work that fast. Good example is SATA(2), it really isn't faster than IDE drives.

My PC is miles better than the PC he currently has... Mr Green

And his PC is bloated with all kinds of software that he's been installing, trying, and unloading... Shake Head

YES.

He already has a copy of Vista, but wants a new machine to install it on.

Is that ass-backwards or what??

Yeah, the motivation and competition seems to be heading that way...

That's is so sdrawkcab-ssa. hehe Especially when new machines come with Vista, if the person loves the punishment. Mr Green

Oh, the problem I had about "Error Loading OS" was narrowed to.... *drum roll*... a bad data cable. Beaten

Without any specific purpose in mind, which is better to use, a PC, or Mac?

I guess it's hard to answer without a purpose in mind, but in the general sense.

Victory! Peace!
