1. O V E R H Y P E D [Rating: 2/10]
This series is fueled by nothing but hype. The only thing it has to offer is the controversial title.

Yes, it sounds controversial, but what happened? They addressed nothing about being mother at 14. The whole time the topic was about how to raise a child without a father... You do not have to be 14 to have this problem. They kept saying society will not be so easy on them, yet whenever Miki makes a cheesey speech, they somehow give in to her demands. The producers were trying to make it moving and made those characters cry, but I couldn't stop laughing because the characters were so stupidly naive and cheesey. Only Kirino's mother made any sense. The reporter somehow disappeared in the end... Bad script sums it up pretty well. Nothing unexpected happened in 11 episodes.

The acting and casting was also horrible. First off, Shida Mirai is too immature for this role. Yes, 14 year olds can get pregnant, but not someone underdeveloped like Shida (Her best friend maybe) and I couldn't stop laughing when she tried to produce milk for the baby. Her character is unrealistically stubborn and confident, it's hard to believe real person like her would exist in Japan. Kirino is a bastard, I guess the acting is fine in this case, but the character is such a pathetic weakling, it was disgusting. Mother was okay, but the father's acting was just a mockery to all viewers. Namase should stick to being a comedian. The reporter was too cool, and in the end he did nothing.

I will definitely NOT have watched this series if I knew how it would turn out to be, and NTV's advertisement team is godly for achieving such high viewership rating with such a worthless dorama.

2. Captivating Drama - best I've seen in over a year [Rating: 10/10]
Lately, I have been resorting to Korean dramas since most of the Japanese ones in 2006 weren't all that wonderful. Simply put - there are three reasons why this story turned out well:

1. The plot and theme is unique. There are several movies/dramas about having a baby, but this topic is extremely taboo, since children bearing children is considered quite an embarassing thing.
2. The entire cast was necessary. Each and every main/support character had a serious influence on Miki and Satoshi - and since the story and plot is particularly interesting to begin with, acting out the parts was almost instinctual for everyone.
3. There is a resolution, but a possible set up for a continuation. Since a 14 year old bearing a baby is quite a substantial subject, instead of cramming an entire way of life into one season, the production leaves off at a point where everyone can be happy, but the future is completely in question.

Altogether, I think this is a must-see if you consider yourself a fan of Jyou no Kyoushitsu, Shida Mirai, Shotgun Marriage, and other great dramas that have dealt with difficult questions. The OST is magnificent, the quality of actors is superb, and the experience is captivating.

On a final note, I will also say that this drama gives an incredible view on abortion. I won't spoil, but while countries like America babble about morality and narcissism, dramas like this bring up points not to be ignored whatsoever.

3. Great acting [Rating: 7/10]
What excellent acting from the young Shida Mirai, well supported by the adult cast and equally brilliant acting from little Koshimizu Kazuki. I can't say the same about Miura Haruma though - I can't tell if the woodiness comes from the actor or the character. While the acting in this drama is on the whole, very good, the plot and storyline is markedly flawed. There is not enough chemistry and a love story between the two young 'lovers' for it to be remotely believable that they would have slept together and created a baby out of 'love'. It looks to me more as if they were two stupid teenagers drawn together one fateful night and made a huge mistake, and then trying to gloss over it by being brave. While it is admirable of a 14-year old to take responsibility for her actions, it is difficult to believe that a 14-year old would have that maturity to do so. The show focuses too much on the fact that a 14-year old wants to give birth - and defends her decision by giving sentimental reasons - but what about the lifelong responsibility that comes with bringing a child to this world? Irritatingly enough, once Ichinose Miki opens her mouth and delivers her speech, everyone starts tearing up and gormlessly follows her wishes like puppets to a string.

It's not all bad - there are some heart-wrenching scenes when one really feels like rooting for Miki, love the OST, but the 7 is really for the acting.

4. A pretty decent series [Rating: 8/10]
Shida Mirai does a great job as Ichinose Miki and carries her role out quite well for her age. Tanaka Misako and Namase Katsuhisa play her parents very well having played similar roles in Brother Beat. The main weakness of this dorama is with Miura Haruma who seems to always just have this stunned look on his face and Kaito Ken's character seems a bit underdeveloped. But otherwise, a pretty good series!

Interesting drama with nice OST. The only problem is the main actor, Kirino Satoshi, can't act at all and not exceptional too. I don't understand the hype about him.

I consider giving a 10 to a show a serious compliment. With careful approach to the topic, 14 sai no haha is a drama with a statement to make.

Abortion is a serious issue in the Western world, and all the drive behind doing it or not is a moral issue. However, this show takes on a completely different perspective: instead of running away, why not embrace the troubled road ahead? The trials that the main character has in this series convey a thought process of love and concern for the baby; not whether or not it is moral to abort it or not.

In terms of acting, Shida Mirai, I believe, is an astounding actress in the making. For a 15 year old she is capable of expressing herself as well as any cheesy Disney teenage celebrity - if not better than them now having done a role like this. It is my sincere wish that someday the entire world will know her.

Dramatically very nice and enjoyable to watch. Great acting by Shida Mirai although it took me awhile to believe that such a naive little girl like Miki can get herself pregnant. I guess that's what you mean by don't judge the book by its cover. I personally disagree with her decision to keep the baby and think that the sequence of events that follow are a bit too hopeful and unrealistic, but I commend the courage that she has. In the last episode, I kind of have this feeling that both Miki and Satoshi are just like kids playing house with the parents as active spectators. Speaking of the parents, I like the contrast between the two mother characters, one supportive another harsh, but both try in hteir own way to protect their children. The narrative by Miki's mother is what often touches me the most.

Dec 2006: I thought it was gonna be the best of this year when I watched the first episode. However it's hard to please the audience since this drama was focus on the controversial topic, difficult to write a suitable solution. For me I liked it alot, there were some annoying parts as well, one will be Satoshi's acting, his expression is soo wooden-ish!! Luckily it became better towards the end. Another is the tabloid thing, it was pointless and exaggerated. Great acting by Shida Mirai, she's only 13!!! And the parents as well. Lastly, SUPERB theme song by Mr. Children~!!! The opening just fits the song perfectly.
4. Comments by occultangle [Rating: 9/10]
The problems with this drama are exactly what I knew they would be when I first started watching. I knew it wouldn't end without stereotypical girls in a coma, baby's gonna die type of cliches. Thankfully they are few and short, so I was able to overlook them and love this show. the baby's father is a despicable human being, and that could have ruined it, but I suppose that is probably how most 15 year old fathers would be. Miki's father was also a little too goofy but he was still likable and surprisingly believable. But Miki's mother was fantastic, I felt that she was the real star of the show.
5. Comments by aiscess [Rating: 8/10]
I got my eyes on this series a month before it aired. Well, who wouldn't? Just by seeing the title, I was eagerly waiting to watch it. But now I guess, the series wasn't that complicated compared to it's title. Miki was even lucky to have the guy acknowledged the baby and have her parents stand by her decisions. But usually, now a days, it doesn't just go like that. I guess, reality is still harsh. Even the school.. I doubt that they will do something like that in real life. The song of Mr. Children really complimented the atmosphere of the entire series.
6. Comments by PaperCaged [Rating: 7/10]
It was a bit different from what I expected and the focus seemed to be on trying to make the audience cry rather than the actual subject of a 14-year-old mother. The ending was good, but near the beginning (around episodes 2-5), the series was incredibly over-dramatic in a bad way. Miura Haruma always had a blank expression on his face and his character was completely useless and indecisive, doing whatever his mother told him to do. Shida Mirai is a good actress, but her character was annoyingly stubborn at times.
7. Comments by ume [Rating: 5/10]
The soundtrack was great. Mr. Children has outdone themselves. The cover of the box was also great, as was the beginning credits part when everyone was lying in fetal position. But although there was alot more potential in this subject, the scriptwriters have managed to wreck it by pulling out the whole plot way too long. Basically it's like....ooo am I gunna carry the baby or kill it and dealing with what the outside world thinks. Should've shown her trying to take care of the child. Would've been more interesting.
8. Comments by monta [Rating: 7/10]
i actually think it was a bit overhyped. it wasn't as good as i thought it would be. and the pace is just too slow. But the role girl (forgot her name) i love how she started as one hell of an annoying 14 year old teen brat and becomes mature as months pass by

but it did feel more like 14 year-old pregnant girl instead of 14 year-old mother

amusing OST. i love how the background music keeps playing all the time. and i love Mr.Children's song

Well for me this is a must watch dorama. Shida Mirai is at her best here with phenomonal acting. Like the title suggests, it`s about a 14 year old girl becoming pregnant and her journey in giving birth to do this baby. This dorama really enables you to see the different reactions by the people around her whether it is positive or negative as she decides to give birth to her baby. Very moving and touching dorama. Intense but brilliant.
10. Comments by NaomiMaeda [Rating: 9/10]
That's a serious and interesting. It's very touching too. I didn't even thought that I could like these series that much. There wasn't much suspense but that's probably what I liked the most. Well, this drama is very much related to these days problems where teenagers become young parents... Kind of scary, when you think about it. Anyway, Shida Mirai was perfect. If she could do that good here, she can do probably anything.

Heart-warming drama about Miki, a 14-year old girl who gets pregnant from her 15-year old boyfriend. Shida Mirai is my favorite child actor and plays the role of Miki perfectly. Tanaka Misato is convincing as a mother who supports her child no matter what. Namase Katsuhisa plays a dramatic (yet sometimes unintentionally hilarious) role as Miki's father. I thought this was a really great drama and highly recommend it.
12. Comments by Ezalor [Rating: 7/10]
Shida Mirai rocks! I have great expectations towards the future of her career. The Drama is quite basic acting-wise and a bit below average story-wise. Katsuhisa was a bad choice for the father because, despite of his good acting, he made me laugh every time when i saw him on the screen because of his hilarious roles in the past. The drama has a typical happy end, which can be satisfying for everybody.

As such the topic of the drama is interesting - teenage pregancy. But again with so many Japanese drama's, the one thing that could have prevented the "drama" - contraception and awarness campaigns - are never discussed. Plus a lot of melodramatic elements were added which could happen to any pregnant woman no matter her age. Great acting though, especially by Mirai Shida!

Watched it from beginning `til end every week on TV and was always looking forward to the next week.

This turned out to be a very nice adaptation of the manga itself and also very well brought by it`s cast.

A story that is bound to make you think about life itself but also your relation with your own parents or with your children.

Great acting by Shida Mirai and Miura Haruma! It shows the struggles of a 14 year old girl who finds herself pregnant. Although the topic is definitely controversial, it was quite entertaining to watch. I'm quite a tough rater because I have seen so many dramas now, but it is definitely one of the better dramas out there

A decent dorama starring Shida Mirai, Tanaka Misako and Namase Katsuhisa - the parents remind me a bit of their partnering in Brother Beat. The choice of Miura Haruma is a bit weak and Kaito Ken's character really seems to come out of nowhere and doesn't get explained too well. Otherwise, pretty good work!

gotto like this drama ...Shida Mirai and Tanaka Misako gave award type performance as daughter and mother...The only downer was the actor who played the father..Namase Kaisuhisa...whose previous acting roles were comical...the trick series/gokusan series ...it was hard to take him seriously....

Still watching. I'm in the middle of it. I find the story a little dragging so I can't really make myself do a marathon (unlike with other dramas I've watched). But I think things will get better as the story progresses.

It was good, although Shida Mirai looked a bit too young? And like, the guy who plays her love interest looked way older, even though they're supposed to be playing people 1 year apart. Aside from that, it was good.

a little slow at times but towards the end it really picks up. the lead character is very admirable. i'm not sure i could be as couragous as she was and she's 14!! be prepared to cry a little with this series ^^

This drama gives a somewhat "realistic" portrayal of the circumstances. Although some parts are a bit too slowly paced and there are too many "hand on tummy" shots. Camera work and soundtrack were beautiful.

Controversial title and synopsis, but the plot itself was thin and many of the character were just too easy to hate [Note: That spoilt boy, I'd like to smack that kid someday!]. Disappointing.

COMPLETE. SS. a deep drama about a 14 year old girl getting pregnant. It's a story on how she deals with her surrounding, friends, neighbours, etc. Who can she turn too? very well executed.

Nice story but a bit slow in the middle. The little actress in it did very well but I don't really like the ending as much as the previous episodes. Still worth a watch nonetheless.

Well, it's just one of those things that attract you like honey attracts bees - I mean, every girl wants to know what that 14-year-old is doing, becoming a mother and all.
