Synopsis
With the Tokyo Olympics just four years away, there is fierce buying and selling of houses in Tokyo. At the Shinjuku office of mid-sized property company Teiko Real Estate, Yashiro Hajime, the manager of the brokerage sales department which specialises in buying and selling houses, is troubled by the sluggish sales of his staff except the young ace, Adachi Satoshi. Meanwhile, Sagenya Machi, a single, beautiful and capable super saleswoman who doubled sales at the previous office, is transferred to the same brokerage sales department. She quickly zeroes in on the two poorest performers, the young Niwano Seiji and Shirasu Mika. Machi boasts that there is no house that she cannot sell if it falls into her hands. She uses her position to make Mika walk the streets with two advertisement boards hanging in front and behind her. Then she bulldozes her way into following Niwanofs preview and snatches his client! With brilliant technique, Machi sells the house to the indecisive client in the blink of an eye. She also sets her sights on Niwanofs next client, Hijikata Yayoi, who is the wife of a doctor. Yayoi has the budget, but many demands and has not been able to find the house she wants c c Machi sometimes actively and sometimes forcibly sells off houses, and pokes her nose into the private lives of clients and their families. Her unconventional ways make Yashiro and other colleagues break out in cold sweat, but her philosophy certainly changes the values of clients and leads them to happiness.

1. Great Acting and Writing Make A Weird Comedy Work [Rating: 8/10]
[Currently available on Viki]
This one took a while to grow on me, but once I got past the robotic weirdness of Kitagawa Keiko's Sangenya Machi (Sangenya-Chief a.k.a. San-Chi) character, I was hooked and enjoyed every minute of it.

That robotic thing was something of a flaw in the way there was never any deviation from the wooden characterization, though given the context of a comedy it was not a huge one. She's an automaton throughout and never once cracks a smile, but Kitagawa's skill as an actress enabled shoehorning some vague hints of emotion into her character in some scenes - yet so vaguely that you as a viewer could never quite be sure.

In a way the San-Chi character reminded me of Mita-san in the creepy drama "Kaseifu no Mita" ("I'm Mita: Your Housekeeper," as it was titled when Crunchyroll still had it.) In that one there was occasional comedy but it was mostly grim, depressing and dull - but it too featured a lead character who was robotic in the extreme. The fact that "Ie Uru Onna" is an excellent comedy saves it, making the weirdness of the lead character a positive element rather than a negative one, and allowing a suspension of disbelief on... a really weird character.

All of the supporting characters are unique, loopy individuals, perfectly cast and acted, and the plots and dialog are always clever. I actually "got" the pun that Yashiro-san threw out in one of the final episodes when Sangenya-Chief did her trademark "GO!" He mutters "Ichi - ni - San - Chi - GO!" I about fell off of my chair on that one.

To be sure it's not weighty food-for-thought, just a great upbeat comedy. But it does give some interesting insight into the workings of the real estate business in a big Japanese city. It's also a celebration of reason and of confident competence in San-Chi's brilliant problem-solving ability and in her true statement that "There is no house I cannot sell!"

[Available on Viki as "Your Home Is My Business!" as of 2022] A geniunely hilarious comedy about realtors working in Tokyo, with a characteristically-excellent lead performance by Kitagawa Keiko. The only drawback is that her character was a little too unrealistically robotic, even for a screwball comedy. Still great entertainment and time well spent.

A new genre about real estate agents. The houses and apartments on screen are beautiful although I doubt it represents the majority of Japanese households. My favourite plot will always be the rich woman who tried to find a bigger compound for her companion, the terrapin.
