Synopsis
Deep within Edo Castle was the ōoku (the inner palace)--the large expansive living quarters for the wives and concubines of the Tokugawa Shogun. The entrance was under the tightest security, and the corridors were barred to all men except the Shogun himself. It is said that over 1,000 women lived in the ōoku to serve the Shogun. For him, life in the ōoku was like living in paradise.

"Ōoku" is the story of the picturesque lives of the women living in the hidden, maze-like inner structure of Edo Castle. Inside, the women wielded their beauty and knowledge: some of them to win the Shogun's love, obtain political power, or to climb the ladder of the ōoku hierarchy. Their lives were filled with romance, hatred, anger, envy, tears, and persecution.

Of the three-century history of the Tokugawa ōoku, this Fuji Television drama focuses on the last several years. It tells the story of the collapse of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the ōoku, and also the lives of the women who lived through these times.

Historical drama. I watched in on the International Channel without subtitles. They were at times using such a formal dialect that I couldn't follow what was being said (especially the ladies in the Ooku). There was a lot of backstabbing and politics, which was interesting to keep up with. The costumes were just gorgeous, and it was interesting to see the class politics (they showed the servants as well, who usually are kept very much in the background in historical dramas!). I liked that it focused on the women--samurai drama is cool, but one gets tired of seeing men fighting all the time! But with all the ultra-formal type language, figuring out what the heck was going on was a challenge! But....lots of pretty kimono!!! <g>

surprisingly good. maybe due to the background of this series, the plot touches many more aspects than the later Ooku's, which tend to focus solely on the man-woman interactions. i would have given an 9 or 9.5 had it not be the content of the last episode - which has very little substance. half of it was a recap of the prevous episodes, which is probabily fine for someone who watches this once every week, but a bit repetitive and annoying for someone watching all episodes in the spaces of a few days.

Ooku is a really well-made for TV historical compared to the the TRILLIONS that are out in Japan--seriously. I used to think only China and Korea out in Japan had such a fixation on cheesy period movies, but Japan has them too--fortunately, Ooku is not one of them! Ooku features top-star actors in that they're all VERY talented. The set and wardrobe is better than some movies. The story also progresses in a lovely pace. I would buy it!

One of my faves, the love stories here are extremely touching and tragic. Kanno Miho & Kitamura Kazuki paired up superbly, though the storyline could be stretched longer. The other latter pairing were also very moving.
In addition, olden japanese culture and all the ladies schemings are just too compelling

I really like the first 4 episodes with Kanno Miho as Atsuhime and it was great to see more of Ikewaki Chizuru throughout the series. I actually like it better than the more recent Taiga version, although the main characters were very limited in what they could do to improve their situations, like in Atsuhime.

Started off a very well costume drama. I was addicted at first. The set, costume everything was so detailed. I didn't quite follow through the story after the first part though. Still maanged to finish the whole thing in the end, but not as impressive as I thought it would be.

Really interesting look at the world of the Ooku during the final years of the shogunate as the world outside was changing rapidly, soon to come calling at the front door.

My first time watching Kanno Miho's acting, and must say it she was much better than I'd predicted. Pace was quite good. Interesting plot, beautiful clothes.

Talk about political games, lies, and backstabbing!! These ladies could teach Nixon some lessons!! Loved all the costumes as well.
