This was a good movie--intimate and realistic and sure to reasonate with anyone who has had to deal with family issues.
While the entire cast was quite good, I thought Kiki Kirin stole the movie with her multi-layered performance as the mother-in-law. Very underappreciated as an actress (at least in the West), she has done great work over a number of decades.

You know, Natsukawa has shown herself to be such an accomplished actress in dorama in recent years. Yet, as far as I know, she still continues to get only supporting roles in film.

In contrast, Abe Hiroshi, with whom she has great chemistry, has been able to graduate from supporting to leading roles in both dorama and film due to his real talent (as opposed to the incredulously misnamed "talento" who litter both the small and big screens), his versatility, and his screen presence.

Natsukawa shares the same characteristics as Abe in terms of talent, versatility, and presence; I hope it's only a matter of time before she becomes a regular leading lady in movies because she certainly has earned the opportunity.

As far as the fourth member in the picture--You--she's got a quirky engaging personality that seems to come through in some of the roles I've seen her in, although she's more serious in this movie playing a subtly manipulative daughter. (She's certainly anything but subtle when she's a guest on Dotchi no Ryori)

She's had some lead roles... And performed quite admirably in two that I know of: Top Sales and Muri na Renai.

If you haven't seen them, by all means... :)

I agree totally. :victory:

Top Sales and Muri na Renai were both TV series, not films.

I was pointing out the fact that, unfortunately, Natsukawa has had only supporting roles in movies.

Cinema is still the most prestigious medium for actors in the minds of most people. It's also where the best writers and directors are found. Rightly or wrongly, no matter how great a performer is on the small screen (among the current crop Natsukawa, Kanno Miho, Amami Yuki and Shinohara Ryoko come immediately to mind), you will not find their names mentioned in critical discussions of Japan's finest actresses or actors because none has made a big splash as yet on film. This is of course true in many countries, not just Japan.

That's why, for all her quality work in dorama, it's only when an excellent actress like Nakatani Miki put together an impressive resume in film that she became lauded as one of the best actresses currently working in Japan.

Hopefully that will happen to Natsukawa as well.

I gotcha.

But you have to start somewhere and she did have the lead in those dramas... In due time, hopefully. :fingerscrossed:
