If you haven't seen the original ROD OVA (3 episodes) it was much better than the ROD TV series. It tells the background story of Yomiko Readman (The Paper), Nancy (Miss Deep) and Joker. Great soundtrack too, a lot like the TV show.

Always thought it was Read or Die. As vibius says, you have to watch the original OVA to have a clue as to the second arc of the series, and who the characters are and how they relate to one another.

I believe the OVA is "Read or Die", and the TV series is "Read or Dream".

They changed so many things about the story and characters for the TV show that I don't think you really need to see the OVA first, although it does put some things in context. The TV show did have its moments, but I think the OVA was more enjoyable. It did focus more on the action, while the TV series focused more on the emotions and relationships of the characters.

I think the relationship between ROD OVA and TV is like the relationship between Kenshin TV and OVA. Sure, you can watch the Kenshin OVA first, but then you won't 'get' the context of the story. In the ROD TV series,

You didn't think that it was necessary for people to know who Nancy was? She was just dropped right into the story, and unless you watched the ROD OVA you wouldn't know why she was there, and why Junior's powers were like that. Also knowing how much the characters have changed make the mood of the whole thing different. If you didn't know what Joker was like before, and how they were almost like one big happy family, the contrast to the TV versions isn't as jarring, I don't think. In the same sense, if you didn't know the happy Kenshin who smiles, you can't contrast it to the battousai Kenshin very well. Just my personal opinion.

So, SPOILER again, I guess:

Maybe the show just needed someone with an ova to appear. Hah. Hahahah. Ha. Ha. Hah Ha ha ha. Hhaha. 'K. Sorry.

Well, I won't reply with any spoilers, just to reiterate that IMHO (only) that the characters that carry over from OVA to TV show seem so significantly different to me that it isn't necessary to have seen the OVA. Yes, I did find the changes somewhat jarring, not sure if that's a good thing ...

But it's just my opinion! :)

I haven't watched much of the kenshin stuff. Those swordplay, shobu, shobu, shobu, ad infinitum shows don't do much for me. I did like Kazemakaze Tsukikage Ran though.

don't get me wrong i have seen read or die ova it was great for me but read or dream just seem to drag on to much for me
16 May 2004, 20:08 #1008
the only thing i did not like about ROD OVA is the fact that it's an OVA...which meant it's only 3 eps long!

if it's at least 12 eps, it would be really good man. i loved the "the paper" and "ms. deep" character.

On an unrelated note . . . and I know it's years old already . . . has anyone out there seen Avalon yet? Is it a good purchase, or should I rent the DVD first?

I got the dvd for a birthday present a couple years ago. I really enjoyed the movie but I always love those bleak futuristic movies though (except for Matrix III :hehe: ). Also I'm an Oshii junkie and will basically like anything he directs - that's how objective I am :hehe: .

Read or dream is the manga. They purposelly kept the tv series to just R.O.D. TV to reduce confusion - there is no official Read or dream title for the anime

Okey dokey, but there are a few sites that refer to the "R.O.D the TV" show as "Read or Dream".

In which case, they cannot read and nead to be slapped :beaten:

It clearly stares R.O.D. T.V. on the opening sp you think they would get the hint

Just started watching Mermaid's forest - another one of Rumiko's work and it sure does not disappoint. It seems that it is season 2 of Rumic threater. Anyway, i recommend it to anyone who like her works... (Inuyasha, Ranma, Urusei Yatsura, etc)

I read the manga before. Mermaid's Forest is very VERY gloomy, completely different from the other Rumiko works you mentioned. I still think Ranma 1/2 is her best work to date.

For me it is Maison Ikkoku all the way! I think it is one of the best anime ever, especially if one is a drama fan :)

As for me, Ranma was fun, but got kind of old after the N-th shobu challenge (I can't appreciate anime full of shobu). Still, it's much higher quality writing than many of the new animes these days.

yeha, that i sture. It is a dark anime, different from her previous works but still good.

I've watched Ranma 1/2 up to S4 only, still havent got a hold on the rest. Maison Ikkoku, I still havent finished, I got stuck on that eps that focuses on his pesky neighbors. hehehe.

Anyway, speaking of rumiko takahashi, it seems that she's the third highest tax payer in the "other" category last year.
21 May 2004, 05:42 #1017
yea. IMO Maison Ikkoku is the best work from her to date.

i've always wanted to read a manga like maison ikkoku where the "impossible things" don't get too out of hand [for eg. love hina. it got WAY out of hand]. when i read the first book of maison ikkoku, i know it was the one!

i heard the anime was draggy. so i'd suggest to read the book.

Kyoko rocks! hehe

I'm in total agreement here. It's really nice to have an anime that is pretty grounded in reality. Love Hina was ok in some parts, but I just didn't get into it like MI. MI is the romantic comedy anime to which all others will be compared. I've only seen the Anime, haven't read the Manga yet, and I don't find it too draggy, although if one has been raised on the new hyper-violent/fantasy animes, I suppose it might not pack as much punch. But I like that.

I also saw the live-action MI movie ... starring a very young Ishiguro Ken as Godai! It wasn't great, but it was fun to see.

(to Arnel) As for Takahashi Rumiko paying lots of taxes, I heard that at least for a while she was the richest woman in Japan. Maybe she still is.

IMO, Maison Ikkoku was created to cater young adults, probably aged 19+. Love Hina was created to appeal adolescents, probably aged 13-14+?
therefore fan service plays an important role in Love Hina. actually, fan service in animes these days plays such an important role. without fan service, it would not attract attention, provided it has one hell of a storyline. why do i assume this? cause most reviews i read from reviewers always expect some sort of fan service.
