Haha, yeah. In Cincinnati Opening Day is a big deal. Parades and everything. Hell, half the city arranges to take off work. Ticket prices for the opening day game in Cincinnati usually at least quintuple for the one game.
We used to be assured of playing the first official season game every year. But in the late nineties that butthead Bud Selig decided it wasn't a tradition worth holding onto and we no longer play the first game every year. At least we;re given the honey of always playing at home opening day.
The Reds were the first professional baseball team in history and remained so for quite a while. Having formed shortly before the American Civil War, the Reds stayed together but didn't play during the war. Amazingly they only lost a couple of the players as casualties to the war and helf virtually the same team when the war was over.
The Reds have a lot of history and have provided much of the groundwork for professional baseball and for the sport we enjoy today. We're very proud of that in Cincinnati.
TRIVIA: The Reds were originally founded in Portsmouth, Ohio about two hours East up the Ohio river from Cincinnati.
