USB stick-sized computer runs web, email, costs $25

By Mike Wehner – Fri May 6, 1:49 pm ET

Renowned U.K. game developer David Braben set his game programming aside for a short while to create an amazingly affordable personal computer that he hopes will prompt an overhaul of computer education programs. The mini PC, called the Raspberry Pi, is no bigger than a standard USB memory stick, and runs a version of Linux, an open-source operating system.

The diminutive device has a single USB input for a keyboard or mouse (or a USB hub to expand those options), HDMI monitor output, 128MB of memory, and an SD card slot for storage. The pint-sized PC is capable of web browsing, word processing, email, and many other standard computer features. None of this would be particularly impressive, if not for the fact that the device costs just $25.

Braben plans to introduce his creation to school systems throughout the U.K. in hopes of overhauling what he sees as a computer education program in need of a refresh. He is currently in the processes of refining the Raspberry Pi prototype in anticipation of getting it manufactured on a larger scale, and projects that the tiny device will be formally introduced within 12 months.

D-Wave One claims mantle of first commercial quantum computer

By Terrence O'Brien posted May 18th 2011 at 4:41PM

Whether or not D-Wave has actually built a quantum computer is still a matter of debate (though, a study authored by the company and published in Nature claims to prove its success) but, whatever it is these crafty Canadians have created, you can order one now and start crunching qubits with abandon. The D-Wave One is the first commercially available quantum computer and, while its 128-qubit processor can only handle very specific tasks and is easily outperformed by traditional CPUs, it could represent a revolution in the field of supercomputing. As D-Wave scales up to thousands or tens-of-thousands of qubits, complex number theory problems and advanced cryptographic systems could crumble before the mighty power of quantum annealing... or at least give us faster Google searches. Just out of curiosity, we contacted D-Wave to see how much we'd have to cough up for a quantum desktop of our own, but we've yet to hear back.

Update: Joseph passed along an e-mail from the company with a little more information, including a price: $10,000,000. Yep, ten large, and we're not sure that includes the liquid helium required to keep it cooled.

^ LOL, "crafty Canadians."

$10M is rather pricey just to check your email...

But imagine how fast you could upload your photos and download multiple torrents simultaneously. :P

But that's internet speed, not CPU speed.

Besides, after spending the $10M, I'd be on dial-up. :beaten:

It is, but it'll probably migrate to PCs as well.

Just built a new PC a few weeks ago.

I really like the new case I got - CM storm enforcer - kept my stuff cool and the fans are relatively quiet... http://www.cmstorm.com/en/products/chassis/enforcer/

went with a 850w PSU this time around with 80 Plus gold rating so the fan doesnt even spin most of the time which helps make things quiet.

Problem is the gfx card, when I'm playing some really intensive game, the gfx card can be ehard in the background. ugh.

Sounds like you need a new fan for the gfx card.

yeah, i've never used aftermarket gfx fans though so im a bit hesistant to do it.

anyway, i'm going to try throttling the fan via software first and see....

But that might let your gfx board overheat.... Are you overclocking it?
