Thanx.
Ryoko's commercial really carries the Christmas enchantment. :applaud:
OT: Just finished the second of our series of Christmas dinners with friends and family. The first batch gave great gifts and were lots of fun. The second group arrived drunk so they weren't as much fun. Except maybe to themselves.
Food was excellent and the table set for Christmas! Glad it is just my husband and I for the actual day. :victory: Getting psyched for eating goose. It is waiting to thaw in the freezer. :woot:

My brother gave up on the idea of having goose: a number of people told him that the bird is too gamey for most... I thought it was worth a try.

In Belgium and the Netherlands, St. Nicolas is traditionally accompanied by his helper, Black Pete, seen here at a festival in the Belgian town Sint-Niklaas.
Maybe Esther can chime in and give a little perspective.
Lol, we celebrate St Nicolas on the 6th December and itLs traditionally more important than Christmas. He was a real person from Turkey and apparently peformed many miracles.
St Nicolas comes on the night from the 5th to the 6th from Spain to Belgian children and brings gifts. He checks if you have been a good kid and has two or more scary helpers dressed all in black. These helpers are called servant Ruprecht were I come from.
ItLs not sure why they are black. One theory is thatLs because they come down chimneys to leave gifts, another one is because they are meant to come from the time St Nicolas lived in Spain, which was during the Moorish occupation. Often they have horns so many people think, they could be a representation of the devil.
Is there is some underlying racism? Possibly but not sure. As far as I know my African-Belgian friends with kids donLt ever think about it that way and embrace the tradtion. St Nicolas activities are social glue really.
The thick black make-up and red lipstick as seen in the picture above has another fun purpose - to hug and kiss clean people and rub your face against theirs as long as you can.

Wow that was a lengthy explanation! Thanks :applaud: Pretty interesting because I wasn't aware of the tradition.
I like the last part best:

Come over here....I love you. Gimme a kiss so I dirty your face and your clean white shirt. :hehe:
^ That would be a major FAIL here in the States.
