There's a transfer student in my communications class who's Japanese. He doesn't speak or understand English very well (ironically this is a public speaking class), and because I'm the only asian in that class, the professor wants me to help him with the course. Wow, that's gonna be a problem since I'm not Japanese and don't speak a word of it. So today I bought and am reading....

Japanese for Dummies
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Conversational Japanese

:hehe:

that's some fuggin bullshiet...you're not even japanese but because you're asian he wants you to help out the japanese kid? why put the onus solely on you if you're not even japanese?

that's like going to some brown skin who doesn't speak spanish and saying hey you brownie help out the mexican kid in class cuz he doesn't speak english...

let's not perpetuate any stereotypes here ...why no...the fact that all asians are a monolithic group is a fact...

and all latin americans are mexican....

I know! I couldn't believe it myself. I told the guy, "Um, I'm filipino, not Japanese," and he just said, "Well, help him out as best as you can." *Headdesk* I didn't wanna be mean to the transfer kid but I was pretty flippin mad. On the positive side, now I can learn a few Japanese phrases that might be helpful. I dunno how it will but oh well.

Besides reading those, my fun books are...

At First Sight - Nicholas Sparks

I finished the first 3 chapters of Japanese for Dummies. It's pretty easy and basic. Everything in this book is in romanji, thank God. I decided to test what I knew yesterday with the trasnfer student. I probably butchered a lot of the words, but I did manage to say "Hi, how are you? My name is..." I brought the book with me in case I forgot something. Only problem was when he replied back, and he was talking really fast, and I couldn't catch most of what he said.

The book must've worked: He thought you were fluent enough to start rattling away at full speed. :hehe:

Lol. It was crazy because he kept going and I was like, "Uhhh..." :nut:I caught some words like "what" and "like" but I was totally lost. Eventually I had to stop him and say something like I don't speak fluent Japanese, I'm still learning. Or at least I hope I said that right. I could totally tell my accent was way off, though.

Hahaha! Nah, it's all good. That's hilarious! I should've done that, and he probably would've had the same expression  I had when he went off talking at full light speed.
