It wasn't all his fault, but there must have been a way he could have avoided it. In the book it was kind of like "if that's what I have to do, then I'll do it." Kind of cold and selfish if you ask me.

If I recall from the book, Musashi was never in the situation where he had to kill Genjiro. In fact, I don't even think he was even mentioned in the book.

As far as killing the young boy, you're talking about a different culture and mind set... You can't apply your morals to a time and age nearly 400 years ago...

Now that I think about it, I can't recall it either.

I know, I mentioned in my above post that I can look at it through the time. It's just...there were people that distained violence, even accomplished warriors, and they spent a lot of their time trying to find another path. I'm wondering if it's because Musashi hadn't experienced enough "carnage" yet. You see how he changes later in the taiga drama.

Yup.

It's an interesting irony: he strives to matster The Way of the Sword, yet he shows deep regret with each victory...

In the film trilogy of Miyamoto Musashi starring Mifune Toshiro, he does say that his "life is full of regrets..."

I did see that trilogy...a while ago, on the IFC channel. I need to see it again.

Regrets...it takes it's toll. Killing is something you can never take back. Unless you're a sociopath, it'll affect you. I remember the story of an accomplished swordsman (can't remember his friggin name) who gave up violence except in the last resort. One young samurai wanted to fight him. They decided to fight on an island. As they both jumped onto the island, the swordsman jumped back onto the boat and left the young samurai fuming as he left.

Hmm. Can't say that I've heard that story.

Interesting.
