How about this one: Whenever somebody is in a hurry to catch a train, the gate they try to go thru doesn't work. If there is one gate in the entire station that doesn't work, they will find it EVERY time. :beaten:
How about when you have the famous running away scene (where the love interest is fleeing for some reason), the amorous protagonist can never catch up. Apparently being in love breeds sloth.
Oh! And usually the person running away doesn't know they're being followed.

LOL! And make no attempts to try another.
Here's another train one: When someone leaves on a train and the person after them (with very important news/information/etc.) totally misses them. End of story. No one tries to get the next train in 15 minutes.

There's only ONE exception to the rule: you have someone in your group who is a certified Densha Otaku (see Tokyo Tanaka San Go). Otherwise, go to the lack of knowing when to use a cell phone as the backup problem!
The importane phone call that everyone's been waiting for. And when the phone finally rings, NOBODY picks it up, they all sit there and look at each other and let it ring about 15 times before somebody finally answers it.

And then they run out in the rain to meet that important someone instead of taking a cab or train.
Regarding the above, what amazes me each time is when a communication channel fails - ie appointment missed, call not caught, or any misunderstanding ... - nobody ever seeks to get clarification, letLs say by calling back, enquiring with friends an relatives or *shock* sending an email.

You must run in the rain....the water on the skin conducts electricity which enables you to run faster and reach your destination like Flash Gordon.
Probably because the story would be over after one episode, if they weren't afraid of calling to clear up the misunderstanding. :hehe:
Anyone saw the 1st episode of Gokusen 3? There are cliche and there are Gokusen cliche. Check out Jackykero's review of the first ep (Feels like watching Gokusen 18) on the drama's page. I'll put it in spoiler tags, but if you saw the 1st or 2nd gokusen...
Spoiler — click to reveal----**** Attention spoiler ****----
Let me convince you by telling you briefly what the first episode is about:
- It starts with the old Kyoto-sensei (Namase) with a problem class 3-D
- Yankumi (Nakama) is the teacher of a class on a remote Japanese island but is fired. She joins the Kyoto-sensei and discovers (oh surprise) that she gets the difficult 3-D class
- The class is a mess, they all look like gangsters and make a lot of noise, until a very quiet one at the far end of the room tells the others to be quiet and they all obey and sit down. Yankumi finds out he's the Boss of the class.
- One in the class tries to hit Yankumi, she avoids his fist but pretends she did not do it in purpose
- Within the other teachers, there are 2 others nice-looking young women thqt the bad behaving kids talk about
- The former gym teacher Baba joins the school but surprisingly forgot Yankumi's connection with a Yakusa family
- One of Yankumi's kids is wrongly accused of a theft, everybody thinks he did it except Yankumi, she fights for him and finaly the police let him go.
- While bad boys are beating one of Yankumi's students, she comes into a hangar and beats them all while doing a speech
- While running to school, Yankumi collides with a man that becomes the white knight of her dreams
- and so on, and so on...

Isn't this similar to the one where one person's already ridden the bus, and it's moving, and somebody else is trying to catch up to the bus but can't? And the person in the bus is totally oblivious to all else around?
As far as people running away, I do know of a recent series where the lead kept running... and running... whether away or towards, he was just, you know, running.

 I read somewhere that it got extremely high ratings, which means they are giving the audience what it wants: the same story over and over again. Looking forward to TabanaLs guest apparence in Gokusen 9 as a mean gaijin English teacher accusing class 3D of theft.

Call me rat fur sensei.
I wish I could've been in this one. Just by looking at the correlation chart's picture and I want to punch a few students so bad. :hehe: And I'm not even a violent person.
I checked and you're right. ep1: 26.4, ep2: 24.8. :wow: Might go down a lot when people realize it's the same thing all over again. Hopefully. :fingerscrossed:
haha i'm enjoying reading the replies to this thread.
here's to add on to the cliche of running around the city instead of taking a cab or a bus looking for someone missing/runaway/lost person,
the characters ALWAYS finds whoever they're looking for.
like in gokusen (all 3 seasons) where yankumi always finds the right abandoned warehouse one of her students is getting beat up in. and in time too! clearly, japan is not as big as we think it is because everything is within running distance or coincidences happen in japan more than in anywhere else, like where i live.
also, whenever the character is looking for someone, their first instinct is to go out into the streets, running, to find them, instead of like calling the other person on their cellphones which could have saved them alot of time and energy. and here i thought everyone in japan owns a cellphone.
I like this thread, though I had trouble understanding all the cliche mentioned so far.
They don't emphasize it usually so it's alright. But I find it quite incredible how many dramas had young, important character(s) with deceased parent(s). In fact, sometimes it's hard to think of a drama where all of the young characters had healthy, living parents.

I don't know if it was in this thread or somewhere else, but somebody mentioned once how in a country with one of the lowest divorce rates and longest life spans, how there's so many dramas where the kids come from families where somebody died or there's been a divorce. [/list:u]
Just read some of these again, there are a lot of funny ones. hahaha
I've just remembered another one. A lot of times, you think that the main character is going to beat up somebody. They go up to the person and instead of beating them up, kneels and begs for a favour for his/her friend/family.
