WOW. Gorgeous room. Cute bikini ;-) But I'm trying to figure out how they both connect. Was she part of the room too?

ok, is "takoyaki" some inside joke or something I'm not aware of? 'cause I'm not getting any hot chicks when I googled it. It looked like this stuff I had at a public bath place I went to...

By the way, those weren't the only huge balls I saw there...

It's as inside a joke as it could ever get my man. Just check the Cosplay threads and the earlier pages of the food thread. You might see one or two takoyaki pop up in other threads from time to time. Oh and the recently cooked taiyaki. Better check that out too.

Cabaret club swingers revel day and night

By MARK SCHRIBER

The popular institution known as kyabakura (cabaret club) is an open-to-all-comers, pay-as-you-go type of watering hole for the Japanese everyman.

At a rate of between several thousand to 10,000 yen per hour, which fluctuates between peak and off-peak times, customers may drink, nibble on snacks, sing karaoke and shoot the breeze with attractive young hostesses.

Author Kazuhisa Kimura tells Sunday Mainichi (July 9) that the present kyabakura system got its start around the early 1980s.

It's been rumored that the most successful kyabakura hostesses command lavish salaries; but Manami Moriyama, a 10-year veteran of the trade, insists this is not the case. Workers usually earn around 3,000 yen per hour, which means on a good night they might take home 18,000 yen. Working a five-day week, this would net them around 5 million yen a year; nothing to sneeze at, but hardly a high-income bracket.

Workers may nonetheless find the more laid-back atmosphere of the kyabakura to their liking.

"Unlike nightclub hostesses or sex industry workers, kyabakura gals project a strong image of being there because they enjoy the work," Moriyama tells Sunday Mainichi.

This image may have been burnished by several recent popular TV drama serials in which 29-year old starlet Misaki Ito portrayed a woman in the water trade.

The profession of kyabakura hostess gained official recognition of sorts in 2001, when the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare issued a license to Tokyo-based Comtech Japan as an outsourcing service for hostesses. The company is currently contracted with some 550 shops and has over 6,000 female job-seekers registered on its rolls.

Comtech Japan's business has been booming: at the end of its last fiscal year it reported revenues of 230 million yen, up by 51 percent over the previous period.

Unfortunately, rues Moriyama, qualified hostesses are not that plentiful.

"Only about 10 percent of the women the service introduces meet employers' expectations," she says. "They may have the desire to work there, but whether they can do it or not is something else entirely."

Meanwhile, Weekly Playboy (July 10) has noticed that the number of kyabakura opening their doors to business in the daytime has been growing. Club Heaven, in Tachikawa City, opens for business at 10:00 a.m.

Daytime tippling may signify the start of a new trend: major chain outlets of kyabakura in Chiba and Saitama Prefectures are said to be in the process of extending their operating hours.

But who on earth demands wine, women and song in broad daylight? The answer is the type of men whom Weekly Playboy refers to as "Hirukyaba Junkies." Hirukyaba is word combining hiru (daytime) and kyabakura.

Apparently, from last spring, many kyabakura began running ads in job recruitment magazines, which led to more housewives and students working the day shift. The "junkies" may feel these amateurs offer greater appeal than experienced pros.

"A lot of the gals want to try working as hostesses, but they're scared to do it at night," says a Mr. Ura, who writes for a Web guide to drinking places.

"They're mostly students or office workers and they're a little bit reckless -- in the good sense of the word. Some of them will even meet up with a first-time customer after work. In fact, if you don't come on to them, they may be disappointed."

But authoress Naoyo Saida, who once worked as a kyabakura hostess while in college, warns men that showing up around noon can raise suspicions.

"Girls tend to be a bit wary of customers who come in during midday, thinking 'He must be loafing on the job' or 'I wonder what this guy does for a living?' "

One way to overcome this bias, Saida suggests, is to show up in casual duds, and the more rustic the better.

"Attired in a business suit, a man looks like he's still on the job," says Saida. "Wearing unconventional attire, on the other hand, will stimulate the conversation.

"But obviously you can't appear too grungy," she chuckles
