I hope not. :bleh:
hey guys-
actually, i live in japan... so here's some tips, but it all depends on where you plan to stay and/or visit. i will tell you about tokyo because that's what i know most about.
-youth hostels are good, but unless you go with a big group (you can sometimes request a family room to share with your friends) it's inconvenient because of the curfew and privacy/security issues.
-a lot of hotels, such as sakura hotel, located in akihabara and asakusa within Tokyo, go for as low as 3,000yen ($27 or so) a night with a bed and bathroom. try booking in akihabara, ueno, or asakusa because they are not the party spots, and therefore, more affordable options can be found.
-capsule hotels are very basic (you sleep in a hole in the wall) but actually since they are popular and "trendy" with foreigners, the prices have gone up
-i think the way to go would be to stay at a "love hotel" if you have 2 ppl or more in the group. it is what it sounds like: a hotel for those wanting to spend the night with another person. but because of this arrangement, the prices to stay are cheaper than hotels and are A LOT OF FUN. you can sing karaoke and laugh at the things that the vending machines sell... the cheapest i had seen was 2,000yen a night, but i'm not sure how shabby that was. i stayed at one that was 3,500yen a night and that was just fine for me.
FOOD
go to a convenience store such as a 7-11 or AM/PM, Lawson's, Sunkus... whatever and buy breakfast food that you can keep at your hotel. go to any shop you want to eat lunch specials, since you can get a lot of food for a cheaper price. go back to the convenience store (conbini) and pick up dinner. the food is actually pretty good, and it will save you a lot of money.
and for the person who asked if people in japan speak english....
Yes. Especially in Tokyo.
any more questions just shoot me a PM.

I want to go to Japan too.... :puppydog:
Cheetara56...Interesting info...thanks for sharing.
I hope the walls are not too thin at the "Love Hotel". Might not be able to get any sleep with all the banging and moaning coming from the other room. Actually happened to me when I last visited Hawaii...ha...ha.
I had to book a hotel room because my mother's place is way too small. So much noise coming from the room right next to mine. The next morning I saw the couple who was going at it in the next room the night before. It was a couple in their late 60's or 70's...a Caucasian man and a Japanese woman. Oh well...love doesn't only apply to the young.

I hope they were looking for their grand children, cause it's not good for the heart at that age. :hehe:
I'm not sure I'd go into a love hotel at 2000 yen a night. Even though Japan must be one of the cleanest country in the world, I wouldn't be so sure about the sheets cleanliness. :bleh:
Thanks for the tips, cheetara56

just don't use one of those blue light things you see on CSI.
If I ever go into an hotel room with one of these, I won't be able to sleep in there anymore, unless I'm wearing a bio-warfare grade suit.

you really can't think about it.. i worked in a hotel, and i know for a fact ALL sheets are dirty, save very high class hotels. I've dirtied just about every sheet i've used when staying in a hotel w/ a SO. :hehe:
otherwise, you'll have to bring a sleeping bag or your own sheets, that way you'll know who soiled your sheets.
I try not to think about it. I never go to hooker friendly hotels or those near the red light anyway. I should be ok. :fingerscrossed:

how do you know that well dressed lady coming back w/ that well dress guy isn't a hooker/escort/call girl?
it's ALL hotels, it's just that the good ones replace the sheets and wipe the walls down more often.
The walls too? :hehe:
I don't know... Maybe it's just that I find the cute and well dress girl cleaner than the crack whore with her fishing boots. :beaten:
