What is that?

It's known as the Golden Turd aka "kin no unchi"

It's a sculpture atop the Asahi Building....it's supposed to be a flame but everybody in japan thinks it looks like a hunk o' shiet, like Gal Circle.

ah...yeah, The Golden Turd, in Asakusa, i've seen it from a distance twice now. Someone told me it represented the foam coming out of a beer can, bottle...but i don't really see that...i agree that it is the Golden Turd moreso, not so much beer foam...lol

my sister and brother-inlaw are in Tokyo visiting now for a few weeks. They said it was raining a lot today (their Saturday). The sun should come out for Sunday. I told them to go to the belgium pastry shop, Mannekan, in Ginza...i've been there three times now and i highly recommend it.

You're right...I've heard the beer foam thing as well as the flame explanation....although it looks more like a piece of crap or a flame rather than beer foam...considering it IS the Asahi building the stated explanation of "beer foam" makes the MOST sense....too bad it looks nothing like beer foam in the minds of most people.

I don't understand how somebody looking at that thing even on a drawing board would think it would look like beer foam in 3D.

Yeah it looks little like a "flame" or "beer foam" IMHO. It's like an expensive local joke, man.

The colored crap, the shiny shiet, the top heavy turd, the wavy waste, the flaming feces, etc.

It's 'Manneken' not 'Mannekan'. And ofcourse nothing beats the original belgian waffles you can buy everywhere in Brussels and Antwerp. I tried the ones from Manneken too at the Akihabara station and I tought they were below average.[/b]

The numbers sound about right... Q and I were talking about it a while back and we estimated that a 14-day stay would add up to be around $5000USD or so...

5000 USD ??? Are you serious ?

Let's see. Let's say you need to pay accomodation for 10 days. 300 USD for 10 days should be more than enough to get a decent place to sleep (ofcourse no fancy hotels). As I presume you land in Tokyo, going to Osaka and coming back with shinkansen is roughly 300 USD (it's even less, but let's keep it simple. let's say local traveling is included). As for food and drinks for 2 weeks, you should have enough with 400 USD.

I don't know what you are planning to buy in Japan. If you want to buy an authentique Japanese sword then your expenses will be bigger ofcourse, but if you stick to some traditional souvenirs you don't have to worry. So I just stick to 500 USD for other expenses.

Expenses for your flight won't be even that big as you are from Australia. I roughly estimate 900 USD.

TOTAL: 2400 USD (And that's even alot in my opinion ! I'm not even planning to spend half of that money on my 3 weeks trip to Japan in march. I have already been to Japan so I know with how much cash I can survive. Some people say Japan is a very expensive country, but it's not. It depends on what you buy.)
