I saw the gymnastics, and I must say that the judges did right with not giving him too high points. Sure, Nemov's performance was very spectacular but gymnastics is not about making spectacular stuff, you have to perform them good and with perfect style too! Nemov made some misstakes and also the landing wasn't that good so the first points he got were fine in my opinion.

I actually didn't catch any mistakes during the performance and it's not like the italian guy or hamm nailed the landing either. Both of which weren't very great either.

The crowd booed so much that the commissioner forced the Malaysian and Canadian judge to redo their scores but it still didn't do justice. That's so messed up. Even the commentators were making a point that the performance deserves to be in the all time performances but in the end it didn't get a medal due to stupid judging :beaten:
Well said, eltinator. I saw this one a few hours ago (hey, Hawai'i time and all; kinda' stopped looking at the internet coverage on the games, good to be surprised and all sometimes) and, man, lemme tell you . . . The Man was  at the judges for a while now (just check l'past gymn' posts) and, well, it really looks like these judges have just about self destructed, with about three of 'em being dismissed from their duties a few days ago, too. AND I DON'T EVEN LIKE GYMNASTICS. Well, I like it a little. Whoops :bonk: .
Goosebumps (and I usually don't get 'em) when the spectators got involved -- you saw Australians in their garb, Greeks waving their flags, a whole friggin' United Nations going on; how the hell does it feel, judges, when the world's raining down on you???? (w/apologies to Toby Keith).
No medal for the Russian . . . for now . . . if the S. Korean can get everyone riled up over his protest (I actually thought his previous performance was bland), then Nemov's case deserves a hearing, no? Nemov gets the class act award for quieting down the crowd (and I'd be saying the same thing if the athlete following his great performance -- and the judges' fiasco, for that matter -- even if it WASN'T Paul Hamm). He did it so respectfully and humbly as well. This guy deserves a reconsideration for a medal. Period.
To reiterate what eltinator said -- the judges who scored low were compelled enough to change their score, even, when the crowd roared their disapproval, the same way the B.C. Greeks would. But, that's neither here nor there. Thing is, if the low-scoring judges were SO compelled to change their score in the name of the crowd's disapproval, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE JUDGES AND/OR THE JUDGES SCORING.
INVESTIGATION
INVESTIGATION
INVESTIGATION
THOROUGH INVESTIGATION that goes beyond the last day of these XXVIII Olympics. Period. That's what I think.
Whoooo, man.
P.S., U.S. men's basketball finally with a convincing win. What? 90something to 50something 'gainst Angola? Yeah, and I wonder if it had anything to do with the NBA Commissioner in attendance?

well..nemov had some little misstakes when he grabbed the bar again, and to be honest, he didn't have much variation either. As an old gymnast I also saw some unstretched toes sometimes from nemov (grr, bad memories from my coach screaming at me for not streching my toes come up again :bleh: ).
and well..no one really nailed the landing this final but the medalists did it better then nemov.
but like the man said, it was very good done by nemo to silence the crowdm very sportsmanlike, he should get a fair play award or something :)
strong by hamm to perform that well after having to wait.
and very entertaining when the crowd starts to bash the judges :)

I caught some of that, Elt... Controversy and gymnastics seem to go hand in hand... That's why I sorta stopped watching gymnastics... It's too subjective...
Best line I've heard so far on the gymnastics controversy, from a caller to a sports radio talk show:
"I think the Olympic Officials should take the gold medal away from Hamm, and give it to the Korean. Then they should turn right around and take it away from the Korean and give it to Roy Jones Jr."

Hahah, I dunno 'bout taking the gold away from Hamm, but, they SHOULD ceremoniously attribute a second gold for the S. Korean . . . THEN give to R. Jones, Jr., hahah.
That RRJ left hook . . . friggin' devastating. And he raps pretty good, too.

Don't hold your breath.
If that's the case, the b-ball team in '72 should get the gold as well.
Whoo hoooo!!!!
Women's beach v-ball: USA! USA!USA!'s May and Walsh beat Brazil for the GOLD!!!! First U.S. gold for women's beach v-ball!
And if I could place a red, white, and blue broom here to express the U.S.'s SWEEEEEEEP OF THE MEN'S 400 meter dash! Jeremy Wariner (gold), Otis Harris (silver), Derrick Brew (bronze), all Americans!
From the "Woah! Another dream team beat down" Dept., the Australian [image] defeats Japan [image] in baseball. This means no gold for Japan . . . and, like I inferred, Cuba [image] in the finals!
Annnnnnd, last but not least:
USA! USA!USA!'s Brian Clay (from HAWAI'I, by the way :say_yes: ) wins the silver in decathlon!

It turns out the Olympic officials have decided not to give a second gold to yang tae yoong of South Korea, and he'll just have to settle for a bronze. Wow, I knew the judging at the olympics was never too fair, but now they've definitely gone too far, and they're really making it blatantly obvious. It's kinda like Svetlana Khorkina's comment about not winning just because she wasn't an American. Sure, I disagree with what she said about the judges taking the gold away from her and giving it to Patterson, but I'm beginning to wonder if what she said about knowing she would lose before she even walked into the competition is not too far off from the truth. I mean, they made that 9.9 scoring error with the Korean guy first, putting him in third when he should've won gold, we have two American all-around champs, which has never happened before, or at least for a long time, everyone saw the spectacular performances by nemov and cassini and yet Hamm's routine, which didn't even seem on the same level difficulty wise, scoring equally to Cassini and even better than Nemov?? I mean, I'm definitely no gymnastics expert, but anyone could clearly see the routines done by the Italian and Russian were way more complicated than Hamm's. After that I really started wondering. And if not just slightly biased towards the US, then what about the Greek gymnast winning the other night, when the competition just happened to be in a dominantly Greek crowded hall, in Greece, when from what I heard, his routine wasn't as good as his opponent's.

Wait, now . . . what.?
LOL, bronze.
hatakekakashi081 wrote:LOL, bronze.
Hhaha. Right on, brah. Whew, for a minute there I thought you might've meant that Hamm's gold was taken away from him, and given to Tae-Young Yang instead. I was going wait for d'a KHON2 coverage tonight li'dat for fin' out :hehe: .
Here's the latest article I could find about the dispute itself. It seems not much has happened, but if they want to get a duplicate gold for the the South Korean, they're going to have to go through a lot. I mean, is it really worth it already? Well, NOW the article says they're "willing to reconsider", but I could've sworn last night as I was signing on and the latest headlines appeared, it read "Olympic Official says South Korea will have to settle for bronze", or something along the lines of that.
Unless, Hamm would give up his medal, but that ain't going to happen anytime soon. He still believes he's the rightful owner of that there medal, not that it was his fault in the first place, and they already presented it to him and played the national anthem and all already. it's a bit too late for this now. the South Koreans should have appealed earlier, while the competition was still under way. Then maybe they could've done something about this.http://channels.netscape.com/ns/sports/story.jsp?floc=FF-APO-2090&idq=/ff/story/0001%2F20040824%2F0247682082.htm&sc=2090

This is all bachi for when Dong-sung Kim nearly tripped up Apolo Anton Ohno in the last Winter Olympics' men's 1,500 meter short track. :hehe:
you know, you're right. :applaud: I still haven't forgotten that. Well, good for 'em then. It's all deserving. Then this was just the US-biased judges panel's way of getting back at South Korea. It all makes sense now, since they had no way of corrupting that sport and allowing the US to win by default. But really, there's no sense whining about it now, when they should've done something about it earlier, when it was still possible to do something.

If the Angolans were college students maybe, but not high school kids...
Anyone know the schedule for Sychronized Swimming in the USA? I want to watch it..saw it in Waterboys..I want to see how it is in the Olympics.
I find that funny that some of you say its pay back for what happened to the americans in the last olympics because the judges in the gymnastics panel were all of different orgin and I don't think there was even one american judge. Things happen and we should remember that the ones that lose out are the atleletes and they are the one we should fell sorry for.
About the russian gym. who said she should have won gold is just being a sore loser. Her performance was no where near Carly Patterson. Carly's tumbling was harder and better performed. I saw the event and many of the russian's routine was easy, especially her tumbling. Grace and beauty don't always win you a medal, you must also be sure and perfect. By her saying that, she basically is saying Carly doesn't deserve the medal and that was pretty mush what she said at the press conference with Carly sitting next to her. Even losing, we should at least lose with class.

Heck, I'll amen this one. Indeed, the 'lympics should be about the athletes, not about the judges. Gymn' rules have got to be revamped. HECK, make any potential judges compete themselves; an exam or something. MAKE THEM WORK, TOO. Maybe cut down the number of judges, maybe more time (a few hours? Half a day? An entire day?) for them to contemplate the scoring?
This is stretching it, but, got time machine? Let's go back in time, get the Greeks' opinion on this fiasco (maybe Plato himself can approach the judges, let each of 'em state their philosophy on gymn' judging, then Plato can let 'er rip, apply some o' that elenchus and all). No time machine? Let's get the historians (sports and Greek specialities?) from all over the planet, get their opinion, see if the IOC and the countries involved in gymn' can make an informed agreement on what inevitably WILL be a new form of scoring for one of 'lympics hallmark events.
