Ok. It was just to make sure all the donations were actually received and not just put in a bulk folder or sent to a deleted email account.

The expression is used in The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein which explores the idea of the moon as a penal colony not unlike Australia.
The no free lunch theory is a prevalent concept in that particularly brilliant book, IMO. I adore Heinlein's work.
