Juri-chan interview translated by JUYI over at D-Addicts. :victory:
Q1: What do you pay attention to during your auditions?
A1:I'll imagine the character and hide inside the washroom (laughs). That's because I'll get nervous when with the others.
Q2: What feats have you performed during your auditions?
A1: Writing using my butt. I don't have any feats, so I thought why not do something interesting. But then again, I don't have anything particularly interesting, so I just did it! Totally disregard my image in front of the judges. (laughs)
Q3: Which work is your turning point?
A3: <Swing> Because its a comedy, made me realized 'its ok to forsake my appearance' and that its okay to do this and do that in front of the camera. That movie changed my mindset.
Q4: Which role leaves the deepest impression?
A4: Nodame... I'm still portraying the character and has been connecting with the role the longest. Ruka in Last Friends also left a deep impression but all and all... its nodame. Better choose a positive and energetic character.
Q5:Among all that you've acted, which is the closest to yourself?
A5:I don't know. They are all not me. But they may all be me.
Q6: How do you feel when Nodame Cantabile is going to be made into a movie?
A6: Very happy. The manga is still on-going but having able to shoot the film especially from tv to movie, i felt very happy. From the width of a tv to a theatre screen, not everybody can experience it. I need to re-create, find the pleasure in movie and consider how film can bring out the interesting creation of the fast-paced nodame cantabile. Felt really happy being able to challenge again. Some of the essence were already shown in SP. In the movie, some minor details and the unfinished portion of the manga will be brought out. Even if you've read the original manga, you still will not be able to guess the ending!
Q7: How's the on-set atmosphere like? With all the nodame crews back after so long?
A7: Not much difference. Although I felt that all has grown in their own capacity. As we've all entered into the roles, there's a feeling that the characters are still around. Once again, feel that how matched everybody is with their roles.
Q8: Whats the most memorable incident during your shoot?
A8: The orchestra shooting in music hall. 600 extras were invited and in Japan, usually it would take up the whole day for them and this is expected. However, this is almost impossible for overseas participants. Some left halfway ..(laughs). Also, there were too few toilets around. Whenever we come to a break, there would be ppl rushing to the loos. The intensity of filming left me a deep impression.
Q9: U r not portraying Nodame's character. How do you enter the role?
A9: Through Make-up & costumes which dolls up the character and also via the inner feelings. No matter how much I think about nodame's matter, if i'm not in the make-up and costume, I can't be her. After the make-up and dressed in her costumes, then i can transform. It is a full package. I will feel weird in her costumes without the make-up too (laughs). In the last sequel of the movie, nodame's costumes will turn mature too with grey, purple color etc. With a change in the costumes, the image will change accordingly and this will bring an impact to the acting. There isn't much significant change in the nodame's age in the manga but as her inner side has changed, there will definitely be a change in her expressions. That is why I'm gradually making the change as well.
Q10: Did you experience any culture shock after filming in 5 different countries?
A10: People lie casually on the grass in the park to sun-bathe etc. In Japan, only those with kids will then bring their kids to the parks for a walk, isn't it? But here, there are only adults relaxing with friends. There are also a lot of benches which is different from japan. Also, French bread. Only a portion is wrap in paper for consumers to hold. The rest of the portions are exposed to the exhaust gases from the cars on the road! (laughs) I think the breads are so formidable!
Q11: Nodame The Movie is break up into 1st and last sequel. Could you please tell us the highlights of the 1st sequel?
A11: Still, its different from dorama. A massive production and u r able to enjoy the music on screen. There's a lot of action-packed nodame also. Interesting scenes and also charming chiaki's scenes. Story tells how Chiaki is working hard to achiving greater goals but on the other hand, nodame seems to have no change, doing seemingly silly stuffs as usual. I'm also looking forward to watching the orchestra scenes which felt very different on bigger screen. Those interesting scenes...it would be nice if they could bring laughter in the theatres.
Q12: When u 1st started nodame role on TV, how's your piano practising like?
A12: After deciding on the music and on the portion of music for shooting (also on shooting angle), then, I'll start practicing. Soonest will be one month in advance and slowest will be about only a week for practise. For dorama, basically i'll need to practise a piece per week. Time for practicing is usually very short and pressing as the decision of the shot is not often confirmed. I then digest each and every pieces ... anyway its great to have been able to complete the task.
Q13: Through filming nodame, have u got any perspective change towards classical music?
A13: In filming, we only picked the essence of the choice pieces. In actual fact, classical music has sequels too i,e from the 1st to 4th movements etc. Very long. Music pieces are like movies, with storylines. Although musically, there are down moments, they often end off with hope. Just like movies, they carry a message, which is why they have different expressions. Just like movies, we cant start from the middle, isn't it? Also u experience different things everytime u listen to classical music. if u understand it, classical music brings u depth and touches u.
Q14: Which dialouge left u the deepest impression?
A14: 'Gyabo~~~' (laughs). Because this is something the normal won't say (laughs). How to say this in the most natural and ordinary way is my number 1 hurdle. "Is this what they call 'love'?", "senpai, your back...I feel like hugging it" etc... these dialouges were in the dorama but in the movie there will be sthg like that as well. But, they will be spoken with a diifferent feeling. Even I felt the change in nodame. So, please anticipate it! (laughs)
Q15: Which part of you, do you think, is growing together with nodame?
A15: Regardless of What I wish and don't wish to do, I still have to do it. Just like nodame questions herself "why can't I play piano freely". Before I do what I wish to do, I'll get depressed if I'm told to do something I don't wish to. This is similar to nodame. however, even so, I can still experience unexpected stuff. It's easy to do what you wish to do but there are also stuff which u just have to do it. Stick to your style and also do what you have to do. Both are equally important.
Q16: Like long drama, how do you feel about portraying a character over such a long period of time?
A16: Feels like living together with the character. At that time, the people around you feels like your family. Also, I maintained the character's hairstyle, finally i thought i should express myself through the character. The character is expressed through the dialouges and at the same time, I added in my thoughts... this kinda feeling...
Q17: What's the toughest part in portraying nodame?
A17: Initially, the more i wanna get hold of this character, the more I can't get to her. Feels like scooping a goldfish (laughs). Nodame is really tough, u really need to be a child at heart and tempo is crucial too. The more serious you get, the more heavy u'll feel; your body expression will become smaller and it'll turn into a boring character. In that case, it'll be just like chiaki. Chiaki can be like that but not nodame. This is where the difficult part is. You cant just do it with hard work. It simply wont work without a playful heart.
Q18: Are you the type who will check on your performance? How does it feel to watch your own performance?
A18: I'll watch! Its a bit embarrassing (laughs).
Q19: Before filming, what would you do to create the character?
A19: The most I would do is fix the hairstyle. To want to enter the character quickly, I would cut my hair asap for preparation.
Q20: Normally, what would you pay attention to, even when you are working?
A20: I must bathe at night. You'll still be tired the next day if you just fall asleep without proper washup. That's why i must bathe, to wash off all the tiredness. In that case, I can also sleep in more for the next day (laughs)
Q21: What would you do to kill time while waiting for filming?
A21: If i'm really tired, I would lie down and take a short nap or open the window to let in the sunlight and wind for relaxation. I don't really know how to converse with people. Moreover, if i'm in thoughts, i would reduce the nodame element in me. Otherwise, I would still talk to people. While filming happy scenes, I would still be talking as per normal! (laughs)
Q22: How to you destress?
A22: Apart from applying plant-scented body lotion, I would do short distance running, drink water, listen to music and take a walk outdoor... A lot of methods (laughs).
Q23: How do you switch yourself on and off from the character?
A23: I can do it from leaving the set. Changing back to my personal clothes and hairstyle.
Q24: How do you memorise your scripts?
A24: How? I'll re-read them a few times when the feeling is right and I will remember them. For movie, it carries less details unlike drama, hence I would just put some feelings into reading. Afterwhich, I settle the rest on set.
Q25: As an actress, you are now active in drama, movies and CMs. What would you like to do next?
A25: Long dramas are impossible but I would like to film sthg interesting. I can do it alone but it would be better if I can work with others. It feels fruitful if I can express my thoughts through some form of methods.
Q1: What do you pay attention to during your auditions?
A1:I'll imagine the character and hide inside the washroom (laughs). That's because I'll get nervous when with the others.
