Filmmakers find Haven in Lunenburg

LUNENBURG - [...]The other is a small-budget Japanese film called Hanamizuki.[...]It's a love story. It's about a young woman in search of her long-lost fisherman lover," said location manager Gary Swim.
The female lead is a well-known actress in Japan, and the script is set in Eastern Canada and Japan.

He describes it as an independent film with a small budget. Swim said the company will hire up to five local people to work on the crew and use up to 15 local people as background performers.
"There won't be anywhere near the special effects of Haven," he said, with key scenes involving the young woman getting off a bus and walking around town.
According to an application it made to the town, filming will include shooting a bus driving along Bluenose Drive, filming in the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic's parking lot, along Montague Street and possibly on Cornwallis Street. Filming will also take place inside the Dockside Lobster & Seafood Restaurant, at the Adams and Knickle and museum wharves, and possibly at the end of the railway wharf.
Mawhinney said he likely won't be seeking a job as an extra on either set. He did that about 25 years ago in a made-for-television movie starring Kirk Douglas as an autistic grandfather that was filmed in Lunenburg. He made about $5 an hour, raking in as much as $40.
But if the Japanese girl does indeed find her love in Lunenburg, "if they want to get married, I can do that!"
