I'm admittedly a Classical novice, but this drama has clearly let me know what I've been missing... The dynamism and emotion of some of the pieces can't be denied. :victory:

It's a really good introduction. You get an insight into what goes on behind the scenes a little. Classical music can be so magical - some pieces you don't even understand until you play them (or listen to them) 5-10 times - especially contemporary classical.

Check out Vincent Persichetti's Symphony for Band if you can find it. It's probably my single favorite wind ensemble piece.

Listening to Ravel's Miroirs - Alborada del Gracioso... A wonderfully lively and dynamic piano piece... :victory:

From Wiki: This piece is heavily influenced by Spanish themes, with the introductory chords reminiscent of guitars. The piece is marked by sharp dynamic and textural contrasts; it contains both stunning melodies and passages of considerable virtuosity.

You'll have to keep me up on your classical exposure. There's some amazing stuff to be experienced. And there's truly nothing like hearing these pieces live. When I was living in Philadelphia as a law student, I could get $10 tickets to hear the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra... it was fantastic. The Kimmel Center is a beautiful hall too.

Only wish I had gone to the Disney Music Hall to hear the LA Philharmonic before I moved up to the Pacific Northwest. Maybe someday..

I really wish I had any more people I could recommend this series to - I've exhausted my list!

I've tried... Some people refuse to read subtitles.

Pathetic lot, they are. :shakehead:

Fortunately, my fanbase is up on the subtitles... they just have already seen the anime already and are inherintly suspicious of a live-action drama. I really believe this series works really well in both formats!

Speaking of which, so far Honey and Clover is proving an excellent dramatic interpretation. I'm slowly being converted to a drama fan...

i love watching anime and i did try anime nodame but it just doesn't work :shakehead: The drawings just don't capture nodame's essence and the depth of her character. The orchestra scenes were not as fantastic as the drama version too as the animation of the players were not thorough and, I feel, not up to standard. I dunno, there's just something lacking in the anime...

I have not watched the Honey and Clover live action but from the reviews I read, the scriptwriter has diverted from many of the important storylines and funny elements that make the anime so special. Plus, the guy who plays morita doesn't look that suitable

Yeah, I pretty much felt the same...

Admittedly, I only watched several episodes, but the anime didn't draw me in like the live action...

As someone with more than 25 gigs of classical music on his computer, I couldn't agree more. I actually had only heard the Brahms Symph. No. 1 only a few times prior to seeing the show and I love it now (though the show truncates it terribly!!). And I honestly can't hear Beethoven's 7th which choking up now!

I'm a big Rachmaninoff fan! And Liszt too...

There is actually a CD release of the complete Brahms' No. 1 'performed' by Rising Star 'conducted' by Chiaki...

I think it is really easy to fall into the first is best trap. Books, Movies, TV shows, whatever the medium. I think that for the critic there are things to be enjoyed in both formats. I'm sure the Manga proffers a third point of view which will capture something different.. it's a function of limitations of each media type and the directorial control exerted by... the director.

As far as Honey and Clover goes - what makes a series special is very personal to the viewer. I think, from what I have seen so far, there are some directorial decisions which have vastly improved the effectiveness. One favorite thing I've noticed is that the main character appears much older and more mature in the drama, which makes the viewer treat him differently. It doesn't get so confused in the coming of age story of a teenager (which I felt the anime got stuck in a little) and delves more into the knowing oneself that I think he's experiencing.
