Hey boys and girls. Universe have finally released TRICK the movie in HK. It's letterbox, non-anamorphic and 2.0 sound but it has English subtitles so better than nothing.

Oh, you might notice that it's a Region 3 DVD, so you'll need a region-free player to view the DVD...

Region 3 isn't a problem. I've had a multi region player for years. Good thing too otherwise I wouldn't be able to see half the stuff I do.

Yes. Same here... I wouldn't be able to check out stuff made on the reamaining 90% of the planet without my multi-region player...

I mentioned this in some other thread, but to those of you who have this movie, is the aspect ratio distorted?

I got my copy from Geezer snd noticed the image is squished a bit... Does everyone have this same copy?

I'm in the process of correcting the aspect ratio, but if a good copy exists, it'll save me the trouble...

I have a good aspect ratio copy of the movie. I can't remember if the subtitles were hard or soft, though.

On my copy, the subs are hard (not removable) and they're sorta obnoxious: there's all this additional info that's plopped onto the screen at various times... I know it's supposed to be informative, but it obscures the actors and even distracts you from reading the subs... "Less is more" would apply in this case....

Now see, in many cases, I liked the extra info.

True, the subs were done by someone or something that doesn't speak English.

But there are so many word games, and inside jokes in the Trick series that I liked getting a few hints as to what puns, games, or written tricks were being played.

For the most part, I saw it as information overload... It didn't help having that text blotting out the actors... Since the movie was obviously widescreen, they shoulda put the text in the black bar areas like they did for the Zatoichi DVDs...

Sometimes the subs can be lost in translation. Like chinese movies, when they translate it into english, it loses some of the funny meanings that the chinese word means, but I guess thats the price you have to pay when you want things turned into english.

But then people who own 16:9 widescreen TV's won't be able to read the subtitles.

I brought the Hong Kong dvd release, dirt cheap it is too and a solid movie although not quite on par with the television series.

I would think that those DVDs are framed differently so that you can still see the subs...

Anyone here with a widescreen TV that can verify this?

I think a number of the Criterion DVDs have their subs in the black areas of a widescreen film... I wouldn't think they'd screw over those (lucky ) people with 16:9 TVs....

I'm pretty sure you can adjust how the picture is displayed on the screen. And I believe there are some films that are in widescreen but still have some bars (I think the aspect ratio is slightly less than 16:9)

Yeah most of the Europeans can verify coz 16:9 widescreen is the norm in the EU. It's a bit complicated but basically it depends on whether a DVD is 'anamorphic' or not as to whether subtitles will appear on screen or off screen. Loosely speaking, an anamorphic DVD is a DVD which has been enhanced to be played on a 16:9 TV and as the such the distributors are aware of where to put the subtitles where they can be seen. A 'non-anamorphic' DVD is basically a widescreen DVD but one which hasn't been produced with 16:9 TV sets in mind. When you watch a 'non-anamorphic' DVD on a 16:9 TV you get massive black bars around all 4 sides of the picture (top, bottom, left, and right). The 16:9 TV has an option to zoom in on the picture to remove the black bars but when you zoom you can sometimes cut the subtitles off the bottom of the screen if those subs are in the black bar area at the bottom of the screen.

Whew, finally got the aspect ratio straightened out... Now to burn a disc and try it out on my DVD player....
