I was looking for something light and fluffy, happy and fast last night, so I grabbed a copy of Singles and popped it in the machine.

http://jdorama.com/drama.71.htm

This show is not light and fluffy. It is not happy and fast.

It features Makiko Esumi, and it is a dark, serious, adult story about a woman buckling under the pressures of home and work. It's about prostitution, blackmail, some really really nasty AV workers... As I said, it's a dark, serious, adult drama. (And by "adult" I don't mean just porn... though sex, rather than romance, is a major player here.)

So far... I'm fascinated. I was an Esumi fan from her movies long before I ever saw her do a comic turn in a TV show. So I know how well she can handle serious subjects. I've got some pretty high hopes for this one.

And because my night time show is so serious, I've turned to watching
Yuko Takeuchi's Fukigen na Jiin (Grump Gene) during lunch.

http://jdorama.com/drama.854.htm

Now this is light, and happy, and fast. Yuko has become one of the most likeable actresses on TV, and it's easy to root for her. This character is great for her, the supporting cast is terrific, and if the next episode is as good as the last I'll probably have to stop watching it at lunch on the little portable and switch it over to the big screen TV.

It was next on the "to watch" spindle.

It was Makiko.

Who knew?

Haven't had much luck with cop dramas so far. But praise won me over. So I'm jumping on the Odoru Nantoka bandwagon. If disappointment knocks, my neighbors will likely see little shiny frisbees flying out my window.

For lack to good dramas lately, I've been re-watching Hitotsu Yane no Shita 1. Man, what a great drama. Can praise win you over?

Why? Because he can totally kick butt (in a karate suit, mind you), he's genuinely sweet, and he just tries so hard! Please his smile is so goofy! Kawaii!

Btw, do you ask EVERYONE why they crush on someone when they post that they are crushing on someone?

Just finished Yakusha Damashii (thanks, Geezer). I liked it for the opportunity to see Makoto Fujita act. Fujita is one of the icons of dorama--he played the lead character in two long-running TV series: Hissatsu (Sure Death) which aired for 30 seasons, and Hagure Keiji Junjoha which aired for 18 seasons. (If anyone has copies of either of these two series, I'd sure like to hear from you).

In Yakusha Damashii, Fujita is aptly cast as an aging crotchety Shakespearean actor. Takako Matsu is the principal lead, playing Fujita's often-times exasperated manager. Mari Hamada, who I think is always interesting to watch, has a supporting role as a colleague of Matsu's character.

Also in the midst of watching episodes from various seasons of Aibou (Partners) (thanks, Cori). Very good, plot-driven cop show with the emphasis on solving tough-to-solve crimes.
