I don't understand why you guys get spam etc. I don't get any. Of course I'm choosy about who I accept as a friend. I don't have the privacy setting as I feel it invalidates the concept of my space. I want the world to visit my page and enjoy what I have to display and listen to the great Japanese music I offer them. I can understand the privacy setting somewhat for underage kids as a line of protection providing they are also monitored by their parents.
Wynter, I doubt there is any world wide internet community offering that will not get the perverts and spam if you do not set some protections.... they are pretty much all clones of My Space trying to get in on the mega bucks My Space rewards.... but they don't have the wide range of interesting sites to visit as My Space does.
For instance I enjoy the Y&R my space with the chat about that soap (my only American TV drama vice).
I do agree that the backgrounds of many of the less imaginative sites are so overzealous that it is impossible to read the comments on them. They become immediate skips.
I also like looking for lesser know Japanese (female of course) singers who are able to display their musical ability to a vast audience in the My Space community. I have found a number of real gems already. Their musice adds interesting variety on my ipod.

Yup.
I'd dump it completely if it wasn't for my niece.

As I said, I only opened an account to view someone's pics once. I messed around with trying to get a decent look, compared to most of the disasters you see there. Mine is based on something I read here http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2006/04/hacking-myspace-layouts but colors etc related to Ai Otsuka's CHU-LIP single |
My background is a a plain light blue that is easy on the eyes and lets you read everything with ease.... I make up for the plainess by having Kuninaka Ryoko, Otsuka Ai, BoA, Nakashima Mika, Kuraki Mai as my guest pictures. And of course a nice selection of music from them.

Ralph-
I totally agree with you on the privacy setting option on myspace.
I don't understand why people would block their page when it's meant to be seen (providing they're not under age).
As far as the spamming, I think it depends on the number of friends you have, and the number of friends they have. Especially if your friends aren't 'selective' in accepting their friend requests.
Approximately 95% of the people on my friends list are people that I know, be it from here (jdorama.com), or people in Hawaii. I do however notice that some of my friends tend to have over 1,000 friends on their pages. -possibly where I could be receiving the spam from.
Anyhow, I've learned to appreciate myspace, as I have been able to get in touch with MANY people from my past that have moved away from the islands. Other than that, I still think that the majority of people take it as a popularity contest and add as many people as they can. (freakin' losers)
*end of rant* (although not intentionally meant to have been one) _________________

Similar to MySpace: but hopefully not so many user pages that are so hard on the eye I've never seen so many web design atrocities in my life as I have on Myspace |
You can't alter the way facebook looks. It's one theme throughout.

True, but I find now that myspace is more about putting yourself out there, whereas Facebook is more a search for those you wish to remain in contact with. There's a difference and it depends on what you wanna get out of the experience. I like networking with people without having to display myself so openly.

Exactly. On Facebook, you can leave yourself open, or you can set it so only those you have added as "friends" can see. For someone like myself, who likes to update family and close friends, this is ideal, as opposed to throwing myself out there when really, it's only family/friends that matter. _________________

Apparently Canada represents the majority of Facebook users, and it's becoming an issue. Corporations have banned facebook from networks because people are spending too much time on it. Also, employers, before hiring applicants, are checking out the applicants facebook book pages to get a better idea of what the person is like... which of course boarders on privacy issues. Employers can't discriminate against social lives...
O, and companies are losing money, too. For example, employees of American Eagle are ranting about the company (pay, hours, etc) on facebook, adn therefore there's been a decrease in applicants for that company, etc.
I'll try to find some articles related to this. _________________

Aha.... but you know all us actors are hopeless egomaniacs or something like that.... let the world see me.... yippee. And you can do the same thing on my space by setting it to private then only your friends can visit there.
I appreciate that very thing on my space about throwinig yourself out.... it gives me so many opportunities to visit the spaces of people all over the world and vicariously revel for a moment in their lives. Where else can you look at a clip of a girl in some place like Jakarta on a day cruise boat on some river and watch the shoreline and other boats. Makes me realize that there are civilizations there with amenities similiar to us but with a charming oriental twist.
Or visiting Keps my space for a vicarious look at the charming Birmingham Canal.
If I want to share with just family and friends then I have my other web page and I simply create an additional page as I have done to show off my Chinese cuties at the Asian Buffet.

these online communities should not determine the applicant's/employee's ability. that's f%#@ed up, if they're actually determining one's qualifications over something as such.
i mean, if an employer or prospective employer were to check out my myspace page to determine whether or not i'll get the job, hey, there is no freaking way that ANY employer would accept me. the majority of y'all may have seen my page, and let me tell you that those corporate assholes would freak out if someone like me (judging by my page) were to apply for a position at their company.
doodoo, i say. _________________

I know what you mean. Well, I didn't have loads of friends (about 50, I think), but I just couldn't be bothered in the end, so I got rid of my page.
Without telling anyone. Oops. Oh well, if it's people I'm really friendly with, not having a MySpace is not going to mattter.
