That's typical for a mall, ne?

Very nice mall. Wow! I'm surprise by the waste of space in the middle though. Wasting a lot of money in rent. It has to be spacious, I guess...

Although it looks like wasted space in the middle I think it might actually serve a purpose. Not sure, just my opinion. By having the open atrium, you can see all the other stores, from every balcony. If they filled in the middle you might miss some. Also it gives the feeling of still being outdoors while being inside a mall. That way the customers will enjoy their whole 'mall' experience on many different levels (no pun intended). Big Grin I personally do not like malls living out here in good ole' suburbia, but that new Omotesando Hills development looks very nice! Thumbsup

agreed.

when they hire a world famous architect as they did for this project i'm sure the utilization of "negative space" and how it relates to the development as a whole is well thought out. for such a high profile development i'm sure all the angles are considered. moreover given the intense population density and therefore density of buildings in a city like tokyo an open air space such as this lends itself to providing a luxurious reprieve from the clutter that abounds throughout the city.

it's like when you go to a high end boutique...when you walk in there you can have what seems only a handful of clothing items in a sparsely populated space....when you go to wal-mart the store is chalk full to the rafters...it creates a different impression in the mind of the customer.

I recently started watching Koi ni Ochitara starring Tsuyoshi Kusanagi...the show, which aired last year, is EXTENSIVELY shot in and around Roppongi Hills....in fact I walked the very same pathways and areas...so I'm surmising that it's only a matter of time before we start seeing dramas shot on location at Omotesando Hills.
