China cancels release of 'Memoirs of a Geisha'
NEW YORK -- The Chinese government has canceled the release of "Memoirs of a Geisha" -- a decision made amid speculation that officials are worried the sight of Chinese actresses playing Japanese geisha would stir a backlash.

Actually, I am against censorship, excepting the most unusual cases.
If people don't want to see a movie, then they can choose not to go.
I don't like it when governments don't give you the option.
However, from what I have been reading, it sounds like Beijing is really postponing the movie release, rather than cancelling. Which, considering the present state of tension in China, may be a wise choice.
Cheers,
PCM

it was merely a joke...in any event with the rampant piracy of foreign films in china this film for all intents and purposes was never censured or shut out. it's strictly a political play on the part of the Beijing gov't.

Anyway, did I miss it, or was there a good Japanese-made film about geishas that will wash the taste of this movie out of the mouth? Something maybe on DVD??? |
Nagasaki Bura Bura. The lead female character is a geisha and a significant portion of the movie focuses on geisha life, but I wouldn't classify it as an exclusively geisha movie. A very nostalgic movie which takes place prior to WWII. Made in 2000, it stars two veteran performers: Sayuri Yoshinaga as the geisha, and Tetsuya Watari as a scholar who both loves her and draws her into his quest to collect old folk songs before they disappear from the collective conscience of the population. It's a film directed specifically towards a middle-aged and older audience. I think it's beautifully done and Yoshinaga, a Japanese film legend, is superb playing the character of a legendary geisha.
