Can anyone recommend a series that's NOT primarily comedy or romance? I'm looking for something darker/more serious, but where the main focus is not the relationship between two main characters. (Also, by darker/more serious, I don't necessarily mean sad. I've already seen One Litre of Tears, and truthfully it kind of bored me ^^; ).
Sleeping Forest or Midnight Rain might be good _________________
^ I feel concerned that the rakugo stuff iin Tiger and Dragon is hard for non-Japanese speakers to understand. I do have this drama, but I'm a bit wary that I'm not going to understand a lot of it. (This is because of things I've read here).
well that's true and i actually didn't get some parts .
But once you get to the middle, you'd understand the past episodes so don't worry Keps. and don't forget the SP is episode 0
but overall, i love it. it's got one of the best endings ever. somehow until now i can't forget it.

im actually watching Gokusen right now, and ive only finished the first episode but it dosent seem half bad. Why's everyone ragging on it? (or is it just Gokusen 2 that's bad? And WHY is the 2nd one bad?)
Its not THAT BAD. Gokusen 1 is better (of course).
Click on button to reveal/hide spoiler:
The plot for Gokusen 2 is just the same as the first one, expected plots..Yankumi takes care of problematic boys, fight for them, the boys appreciate her..etc..some parts are quite boring...
but IF you are A BIG FAN of JE boys (kame and jin) maybe you can consider watching it! _________________

try KUROSAGI!
just kidding..
IWGP (Nagase Tomoya, Yamashita Tomohisa, written by Kudo Kankurou) is quite dark. It's funny but the violence & imagery give a sense of doom. I haven't finished watching it myself but so far its great. Kubozuke was great in it.
Taiyo no Kitetsu / Kisetsu (?) is good too. Yeah, Takki is well known as the "wood" here but he's evil & manipulative in Taiyo. The story revolves around vengence but there's also love. Its based on a book I think.
Suna wo Utsuwa (Nakai Masahiro, Ken Watanabe) is about murder. Slow but the shots were all beautiful. I was surprised I finished watching it. A serious beautiful dorama.
100million Stars Falling from the Sky by Takuya & Fukatsu Eri is wonderful too. It does involves love but the twisted plot & dark theme of the whole dorama makes it a wonderful mystery. A really good dark drama. Written by the same screenwriter for Sleeping Forest.
i just love dramas that induces heartache

gokusen 2 sucks!!!! don't even think about it, a total waste of time.
101% agree to you. G2 is the WORST school drama ever made.
right now i recommend Tokyo Friends starring Ai Otsuka.
Rei (Ai Otsuka) dream is to go to Tokyo. she thinks her future will be there. so as she arrived in Tokyo she meet her true friends and together they face many problems in life and they're purpose in life.

HELP!~
Once (and randomly), I told my classmate (who's a non J-Ent fan) to go watch Swin Girls (cuz she had nothing to do). So she did, and now she's begging me for more movies. She enjoyed Swing Girls a lot (and so did I )
The problem is, she's asking for more J-Movies!~ And she wants movies, not doramas (she doesn't like too many eps.) Can anyone recommend me movies to recommend to her? She says as long as they';re as enjoyable as Swing Girls. _________________

1.Linda Linda Linda
Basically its about a band founded on a high-school and they are preparing for their first gig on a school festival. But problems arise as their lead guitar girl has an accident and can't play and there are differences between other members of the band. Thats what we learn in the first minutes of them movie but still, the girls, esp. the band leader Kei (Yu Kashii from Lorelei) wont give up. So they are trying to find a new singer, put the band together again, find some songs to play and practice till the gig.
Lot's of work to do and girls in their age and at high-school have other problems too, like love and stuff... you know.
So yeah, will they eventually make it and rock the school?

doesnt really matter whether the movie/drama is old.
Yeah, I guess But being a girl, it bothers me when people's clothes are sort of old fashioned. Hehehe gomen. But I already recommended Waterboys movie to her. I think she's gonna watch it tonight. _________________
