The 27th Japan Academy Prize ceremony was held at Tokyo's New Takanawa Prince Hotel on Feb. 20.
Over 30 actors and actresses, who are prominent in today's Japanese cinema, appeared at the venue as this year's nominees and presenters.

Most of the ceremony attendees were invited guests and lucky fans who had bought advance tickets costing about 40,000 yen each. Even though a course dinner is included in the price, it might be still out of reach for many people -- except the devoted fans. Some tickets were being sold at even higher prices on the Internet.

Prior to the ceremony, a close race among a few films had been expected, such as Venice International Film Festival-winning film Takeshi Kitano's "Zatoichi," blockbuster film "Bayside Shakedown 2," and "Spy Sorge" that is the final work of 72-year old director Masahiro Shinoda.

Edging out those major nominees, however, "When The Last Sword Is Drawn," directed by Yojiro Takita, won three categories: best picture, best actor in a leading role (actor: Kiichi Nakai) and best actor in a supporting role (actor: Koichi Sato). This film illustrates a nameless member of the Shinsengumi, a special samurai group during the turbulent time in end of the Shogunate.

Nakai and Sato, who perform spirited samurais tied with a strong bond, are also like-minded friends in their real life. The actors looked shocked when they received their awards, but both of them commented with tears in their eyes that "it means a lot more" that their film won the prize for best picture.

Also, the prize for best actress in a leading role went to Shinobu Terajima, which marked her 10th awards with the film "Akame 48 Waterfalls." This film is based on the Naoki literacy award-winning novel of the same title written by Chokitsu Kurumatani.

There was a story behind her starring in the film.
Terajima, who was impressed by the original novel, wrote to the author five years ago using a postcard questionnaire attached to the book, and told him she would want to play the part of the main character if the novel was ever made into a movie.

In her speech at the ceremony, Terajima said in a tearful voice, "Standing right here had been such a huge dream since I started acting. The dream has come true tonight."

In addition, "Like Asura," a film that portrays the conflicts of love affair, sex and family love through the life of four sisters, nominated for 12 categories, more than any other film, was awarded for best director, best actress in a supporting role and best screenplay.

The list of winners of all categories in The 27th Japan Academy Prize of awards is as follows:
