Synopsis
The drama is based on the autobiographical book by Lily Franky.

Nakagawa Masaya (Hayami Mokomichi) has always been a bit of a "mama's boy", but as he grows older, his mother's mannerisms start to get on his nerves. With no real goal in mind, he escapes to Tokyo.

Leaving behind his Okan (Baisho Mitsuko), Ma-kun finds himself struggling to live on his own. Can he survive without Okan's guiding hand? What will he do when he realizes that Okan's hand may disappear from his life forever?

1. Heartwarming Drama - Though Draggy [Rating: 6/10]
The drama starts with annoying Ma-Kun who wasted his mom's affection. He actually doesn't like to be called Ma-Kun, he felt that it's such an embarassing nickname to be called for grown-up kid like him. His mom - okan still felt that Ma-kun is always be her baby, always need to be protected. Ma-kun grows up in single parent environment, his mother opens a restaurant where okan entertains her guests with her voice.

As he graduated from high school, Ma-Kun then pursued higher education in Tokyo, he took Art study where he met Manami and Narusawa (Hiraoka Yuuta). Ma-kun was so happy living in Tokyo, seeing Tokyo as a freedom. He started to living in extravaganza, forgetting how his okan works very hard in hometown for supporting his life, forgetting to call his okan, smoking, skipping class. When he graduated, he got difficulty in finding job, luckily Narusawa-kun helped him to become part-time illustrator.

One day he was struck by a phone call by his auntie from hometown, he was informed that his okan has oesophagus cancer and she rejected doctor's advice to do operation. For Okan, voice is the most important thing for her, to talk to Ma-Kun through phone, to entertain her guests from her voice and many things. Ma-kun felt guilty and quickly went home just to meet her okan. In this chance, Ma-kun was eventually asked okan to come with him to Tokyo - stay with him. There are quite number of intricts after her moving to Tokyo until Okan left Ma-kun forever.

The drama is bit draggy so I just give 6 as a score. However during your watching, you will be entertained by nice soundtrack. Happy watching!

2. Didn't like it in the beginning, LOVED it by the e [Rating: 8/10]
I really did not like Tokyo Tower for a good 4-5 episodes. I found Ma-kun to be selfish, stubborn, and heartless and I could find nothing in him to sympathsize with.

But slowly, subtly, the story began to touch me. Okan (Baisho Mitsuko) gained more of a presence and I was instantly drawn to her. I could see a true, real mother in her eyes, and her affection for her son was infectious. I was able to forgive Ma-kun his behaviour because his Okan could. I should also give a shoutout to Kashii Yu, who plays Ma-kunfs girlfriend Manami. She did a fantastic job and I really believe shefs an underrated young talent.

I sobbed in the last two episodes, and it had nothing to do with a son losing his mother. It had everything to do with the world losing Okan. This drama was great.

3. AWESOME [Rating: 10/10]
By far, one of the better dramas i think I'd watch again. Love the theme song and soundtrack. The pace was kind of slow in the beginning but does pick up real quick. The story seemed plausible, the characters definitely made it believable and relatable. It was very inspiring to watch how Ma-kun made it out on his own...and see his life unfold as he moved from the rural country into Tokyo. Very sad story and full of drama but was very enjoyable.

4. Dragging.... [Rating: 6/10]
1st half is enjoyable and gave it 6, because of that. This drama definitely lacks meat. It should've been shorten by 2 or 3 hours, if not more. It's just the same cry, run, eat, late for work, cry, run, eat, late for work, all the time. :bleh: I'm sure the special is 10 times better than this. It took me 4 months to watch the last 5 episodes.

Yes, I prefer washing the toilet bowl to this.

5. Starts slow but turns really heartwarming [Rating: 10/10]
It was annoying how Ma-kun reacted to his mother in the beginning but as the story progresses it really does become touching. There's a great emphasis on family and you really can't help but like the mom. The dad was really annoying too but they all come together as a family. I just finished episode 8. You'll like it once you get past the first few episodes and when they get to Tokyo..

6. An odd ode to mom [Rating: 8/10]
The old theme of the country bumpkin landing in the big city. In this one, a bunch of uprooted loners find a home-away-from-home and learn the value of friendship and momship, thanks to Mrs. Busybody. The show has some nice moments until it gets bogged down in thick melodrama.

It starts out slow, and Hayami's character IS painfully frustrating. But the second I started thinking his character wouldn't grow at all, he did, and I got sucked into this touching tale about the bonds between family. The last five or so epiodes are especially heartwrenching. Baisho's protrayal of the mother was so endearing, Hayami grew on me; everyone was so wonderful in this. Definitely one of my favorites.

Very, very slow drama. The story is actually pretty good, though Mokomichi's character is so frustrating sometimes. It was a nice story...but I just couldn't deal with how slow it went. I forced myself to finish it in two days just to be done with it. The supporting characters were pretty fun though. I quite liked the three guys from Ma-kun's first apartment building.

Oh and dat Kyushu dialect. Holy crap, lol

[INCOMPLETE. SS] seems like people like this. I dropped this so I don't know if it gets better towards the ned. my reason for dropping this is because I'm too tired watching the lead actor's character. I feel like giving a slap on his face so he'll realize that he should wake up and not do all the wasteful things in the earlier episode.
4. Comments by moonchyld [Rating: 8/10]
it was a poignant drama.. mokomichi actually pulled it off pretty well, the character just lacked growth I guess. It just seemed that one after one things were happening that were supposed to have a profound impact on him, but then he generally remained the self-centered spoiled brat he was at the beginning.
5. Comments by Tad [Rating: 10/10]
Brilliant story! Mixed with some comical scenes, this tear-jerking drama comes up with the goods. Great soundtrack (despite the poor english singing effort by some japanese chick), great cast and overall just a great drama to watch and experience.

It is NOT fun watching Hayami Mokomichi act like a spoiled brat, especially when he doesn't even look that good here. I gave up after 5 eps b/c I could see where things are headed already & didn't feel motivated to go on.

this dorama started slow, at first i hate Ma-kun. I really hate his spoiled manners. But after some episodes i started to like his character and fall in love with Okan. She is such a nice Mother.

Heartwarming family drama. It's nice to see the mother-son relationship. How true that Okan is the most important person in one's life. Simple day-to-day life story but meaningful.

An extremely touching and warm drama filled with tears and laughter. Everyone needs an Eiko-Mama in their lives, and there is so much to be learned from the optimistic Okan.

A remake of the movie with Odagiri Joe of the same name. Not as good as the movie, but not bad for a "cover version". Misuko Baisho very good as Oka.
