I'm sorry that some can actually find this dorama "boring." I found it ANYTHING but that. Fujiwara Norika, who used to be the typical bimbo stereotype (cast for her magnificent body rather than any acting ability), shows that she has indeed become a very good actress with hard work. The other lead, the complex Osawa Takao, has more of a muted role in this dorama, compared to other things he's done. Osawa and Fujiwara make a very sensuous and attractive couple here. Also, brilliant supporting acting by Tomita Yasuko, Abe Hiroshi, and Kato Takako absolutely dominate any scene they are in.
The storyline of adultry is extremely difficult to portray effectively in any fashion. But the writers and director of "Mukashi no otoko" let the story go its natural course, and we see that adultry does indeed exact a terrible penalty to everyone involved (no, not death.) The script is especially sensitive to the suffering of those people left behind by the offending lovers--family, friends, and even the offenders themselves. I have not seen a better portrayal of the frustrations and devastation of people caught up in spouse-cheating since the magnificent "Aoi Tori." As with Aoi Tori, the viewer can identify quite readily with the reasons that these characters fall into adultry. We're even made to feel somewhat happy when they feel happiness, after suffering so much in their former situations. But such elation is temporary, and we see the troubling results of their indiscretion.
The ending, as with all good stories, is quite surprising and we wonder if it is truly deserved. But the realism of what people go through with regards to this topic is accurately, if not cruelly portrayed, and very well-acted throughout. Some monologue lines here I still remember because of their stunning summation of the situation at hand--to me that is the mark of a great dorama. The theme song and introduction are also very, very appropriate-- This is one of my favorite Ayu songs because of the strong emotions I experienced when watching this powerful dorama. It requires some maturity and experiences in relationships to appreciate "Mukashi no otoko", but everyone should understand what makes people do this type of thing, and what often happens as a result. Same as some other people, I watched this series because of Norika Fujiwara. Her performance was very good, better than I expected.(I admire her even more now) Overall the series is not outstanding like "Long vacation" or "Love Generation". I still enjoyed it very much, didn't find it boring at all. But it is not for everyone. This is a serious drama/love story..... I liked this drama. The passion, the sex and Fujiwara Norika! Whoa! The plot was so-so, but the cast seemed to keep it alive. Tomita Yasuko did a great job in playing the mentally unstable wife. Nevertheless, I recommend this drama to people who don't mind the "married man meets ex-girlfriend" plot. If you like love triangles and enjoyed Kinyoubi no Koibito, you may like Mukashi no Otoko. I didn't. I did like the part when Arashi and Akari broke up (one of many times) and symbolized their split by deleting each other's names from the cell phones. So this is exactly the type of drama that I love. I like stories about affairs. I mostly love all the cast. Great music. Great opening credits. And just an overall mood and style that I love, it feels very classy like a black and white film from the 50's. It get's way overdone near the end, and I do mean way overdone. When they have the wife dressing up as little red riding hood and everybody just accepts it, no one can possibly imagine it's fake???!!! And in general it's also just too fast paced near the end. All this sort of kills the vibe it had going, but honestly watching it didn't feel half as bad as it seems putting it into words. Just about the sultriest drama I've seen so far. Fujiwara Norika and Osawa Takao star in this drama as ex-lovers who meet up again and discover that they're still as hot for each other as before. The only problem is that Osawa Takao is married, and Fujiwara Norika is dating. Nethertheless, they proceed to have an affair. The drama is somewhat thought provoking as you see the effect the affair has on not just the wife and boyfriend, but also the main characters themselves. Not a bad drama at all - one of the more realistic ones I've seen. Started off on a quick pace and then slowed down after the 4th or 5th episode.
