Omg, I read that PS3 is going to be able to record gameplay. Apparently, this already can happen with Japan-only game Mainichi Issho, but should work with other games in future.
I want it NOW!
Anyhoo...I'm back on the PS2, playing Jak 3, which is such fun. A simple platformer, but I love it. :victory:
I'm still working my way thru FFX. I was playing on the weekend for an hour without getting to a save point, and got my first Game Over - so I had to re-start from the last save point. What a pain :banghead:

Seriously, that game sounds more like torture than fun.

Nah, i'm really enjoying it. It was my own silly fault I got the Game Over, trying to end a random battle quickly instead of healing my party when they needed it :grumble:

It can be annoying, but more for the times where there's a lot of cutscenes and you want to save afterwards so you don't have to sit through them again, or when you suddenly have to turn the game off but don't know where the next save point is

All the same, I think I'll be giving it a miss. :hehe:
Oh cutscenes? They annoy me sometimes too (I get annoyed easily, you might have noticed, lol). Well, only if they're long and lots of them.
When I tried Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty, I couldn't believe the amount of cutscenes. Too too many. Apparently, this is usual for Hideo Kojima games.
Already finished a first run through The World Ends With You. And now its pulling me back with the promise of more pins, an Ultimate difficulty, and a secret enemy if I go back through all the levels.
So I've been playing GTA 4 for the last five hours. This game is SO ADDICTIVE! Out of 13 attempted missions, I've only failed 1... but I think I made up for it. I'm not sure.

Then you would do well to stay away from the Xenosaga series. The three games have a complex sci-fi story told thorugh many cutscenes. I personally enjoyed the games quite a bit, but others did not enjoy the lengthy cutscenes. One was 30 minutes, just like an anime episode.
The game save points in FF X aren't that bad, really. Most console RPGs tend to have the "where's the next save point" problem unless they are very close together. IIRC, FF X is player friendly in that activating the save point will grant the characters a full heal, making them great power-leveling points. I do know FF X-2 allows for the full heal. Some other games, the Digital Devil Saga series comes to mind, are much more restrictive. In DDS, only the Large Save points allow healing, and then only after paying an amount of gold proportionate to the amount of healing needed. The much more common Small Save points only allow saving and teleporting to a Large Save point. Problem is: you can't teleport back to the Small Save point. Mind you, I thought the DDS series were excellent games that required good tactics to win, but I would have to say that they were designed more for the hard core RPGer.

it was addicting at first. but then after a few weeks i got bored of it.
i think it was overhyped.

Wow, it seems the more I read about RPGs, the more I get put off the idea of them.
And no way could I put up with a 30-minute cutscene. The ones in MGS weren't really long, there was just loads of them.
I've been playing more Jak 3 today. There's quite a bit of driving various vehicles, and I'm on another part which requires makng leaps. It's quite fiddly.
I've not felt like Oblivion so much. I got fed up of The Collector quest. I only need 2 more statues, but I'm a bit like :bleh: about it.
(Madoka, I know you were having trouble with that quest. I've cheated and used my guide to tell me which ruins to look in  )

I think I need to stop writing about JRPGs, as I seem to be single-handedly making you hate them. I have 32 PS2 games, of which 30 are JRPGs; 19 PS1 games, all JRPGs. So as you can tell, they're all I play. It's like playing in an anime episode sometimes, which I quite enjoy. Some of the games have the original Japanese soundtrack, and you sometimes get a "Baka!" from the girl characters. :)
That quest was driving me crazy...still is, as I am not done with it.
Lol Madoka, I'd already been put off some RPGs by stuff I'd read in magazines. :hehe:
Hmm, well I have just two statues left to get in Oblivion, and the two places I know thet are - because of my guide - I just cannot find them. Grrr.
I got to annoyed to carry on with that quest for now.
:banghead:
3 hours? Then someone need to exorcise the demon in me. When not on working days, I often play over 8 hours straight.

Some of the rpgs allow you to skip cutscene. I think you can skip it in Xenosaga (been a while since I played it). But games like FFX do not allow you to skip them.
MGS3 kinda have integrated cutscene. With beautiful graphic, nice VA and good animation/act; I found them very enjoyable.
Most of the games that I played in PS1 and PS2 do not have a "save anywhere" function that we can find in most PC games. Exceptions are few. Romancing SaGa comes to mind, if I'm not mistaken. Inconvenient at times, yep.
But the "press start button" annoys me more. Why do they need that archaic arcade game feature for a console game?
The one that annoys me the most are the inability to reload a previous save while playing. In some RPGs, I will go into that reloading ritual every few minutes. Often, I have to do the R1+L1+(R2+L2+)start+reset combo or reset the console. Not only that it messed up my buttons quickly, it also makes me sick of seeing logo after logo after logo...
Lol Amano_Tsukiko, 8 hours straight is a lot.
Regarding saving games, I really really loved that with Oblivion on PS3, you could do the "save anywhere" thing, and always go back to exactly wherever you stopped playing.
I'm feeling really aggrieved playing Jak 3 on PS2 that sometimes I have to go back and do stuff I've already done, because it won't save everything I've done. :bleh:
Oh, I've got to ask you gamers - if you play with other people in the room, do you think you annoy them?
I'm sure I annoy my boyfriend when I exclaim. Like tonight I was going "oh no" and "oh PLEASE!" whilst doing a really annoying and difficult task. When I failed the very last thing I had to do by about 3 seconds (it was a timed task), I whimpered for a while.
Depends what game you're playing. I can remember how much time I sank into playing Counterstrike. My eyes would hurt from playing in a dark room and seeing too many flashbangs go off. :shoot:
You can definitely go that long if the game gets pretty engrossing. Even if there are save points or if the game is a bit modular in nature, as long as your interest is being piqued it just seems like you need to keep playing.

I'd say I don't, although that's the exception rather than the norm since I usually play games alone, and love the single-player experience. Can't have too many distractions around.
That, and what I exclaim are things that usually get bleeped, so whoever's around might be indirectly verbally assaulted... so I'm saving them the trouble of having to hear that.
