PlayStation 3 gets a price and a launch date
Mike Antonucci, 07:11 PM in Gaming

(Posted by Mike Antonucci immediately after the Sony press conference.)

LOS ANGELES - Sony concluded its Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference Monday with a blockbuster announcement: It will launch the PlayStation 3 video game console in North America on Nov. 17 with two price points.

A version with a 20 gigabyte hard drive will sell in the United States for $499, and a version with a 60GB hard drive will sell for $599. The machine launchs first in Japan, with the same two versions, on Nov. 11.

Sony said it expected to be able to supply 2 million machines worldwide during the immediate launch period and accelerate to 4 million shipments worldwide by Dec. 31.

The other surprise wrinkle from the press conference was a demonstration of built-in technology in the PS3 game controller that allows the movement of the controller itself -- no button presses, no thumbstick wiggling -- to direct action on the screen, a la the much-touted, one-handed controller that Nintendo has been developing for its upcoming console. In a brief demonstration, Sony showed off the way its standard-shaped game controllers could be gripped with two hands to fly a plane -- tilting, turning and spinning the aircraft by making those motions with the controller itself.

i thought that was the best part of the announcement, since im playing Ace Combat Zero now, and I already pretend my controller will help me bank and turn by waving it in the air while im playing.
