I know what you mean. I wanted my right nostril done for YEARS. I finally got old enough to get one, and my part time job didn't allow facial piercings. I got another job that allowed people to look however they wanted, so I got my tongue pierced. I figured since I was a freshman in college and only worked part time, it wasn't a big deal. Plus mine is done far back, so you can't see it when I talk. They do have clear bars that can hide them, even in the future for when I get a "realworld job". I worked at that job for 2 years....I should have gotten my nose done then. When I switched to a different part time job, I was a bank teller so I definitely could not have my nose done  If I had gotten it done during those 2 years, I could have taken it out at my leisure like I can do with my earrings.
My tongue bar I will NOT take out for anyone. I'm very stubborn about that, and it will close if I take it out because it's a muscle. I'd rather wear a clear bar when I get a real job. When I apply for jobs, when they discuss dress code, I'm very up front about it. My teller job, I wasn't allowed to have it but when I asked them about it at the 1st and 2nd interviews, they said "Uhhh.....where is your piercing? I don't see anything!". I told them where and they said "This whole 30 minute interview I didn't see a thing and I looked directly at you. Customers will not see it....so you can keep it and work here".
As for tattoos, I want some but I haven't gotten around to it. One I want on my lowerback, but it'll cost a lot so I have put it off for a long time. Another I am considering for my ankle, but I'm concerned when I get a real job and when I'd wear skirts. Another I would consider for the back of my shoulder, but I keep thinking "What about if I had to dress for a formal event and the back is out??". LOL I'm paranoid.
