You can pause it and wait for it to load while you do other stuff or open a new browser window. I hated it when I had dial-up internet access. It used to take me 2-3 hours to watch a 10 minute clip.

Before the earthquake at Taiwan, I had no problem with youtube at all. Very fast and smooth...
