let's just talk about smap from now on so that people won't get offended or something. i think that most people wouldn't know who 5566 were unless you told them. i personally didn't. i think talking about them just gives them free publicity.

Elaine, it's an article that analyses how cleverly SMAP is used to make money. It talks about how they are "objectified" as male sex obejects (it also talks about Kimura-san's... uh... pleasures), and it explains very good as to the true power structures behind SMAP.
It also goes in detail into the images that is represented by the SMAP guys; why they ultimately are to play good guys with agressive backgrounds, why they are designed to appeal to women and homosexual males, and such things.
I'm not an English native speaker myself, so I very well understand your problems with this text. It's kind of difficult with a lot of vocabulary that needs to be looked up. But take the time and read it fully. It's definitely worth it.

Yes, our points of view are too far apart. Don't worry - I get very passionate over things, but I've learned where to draw a line. :bonk:

And yes, I like Sorimachi-san's work a lot. I'm really impressed at his developement as an actor. He's not as good an actor as Kimura-san, but you can tell that Sorimachi-san tries really hard to improve himself. That impressed me, i.e. since you can see the success of his improvement.
Yes, I know he was with Johnny's and did background dancing for Hikari Genji at the same time as SMAP. I wondered if he perhaps was the person who was supposed to go into SMAP before it was formed.
I'm glad, though, that he left Johnny's. That kind of management would've sooner or later killed him (proverbially)...
He's played together with Kimura-san in Fly Boys Fly, and with Shingo-san in "Miseinen", btw. They seem to have a good on-screen chemistry, i.e. with Shingo.

OIC.. But they did say that Nakai's singing is a joke for Japanese, rite? If they do so, I totally din agree with it.. Although his voice is bad, but he really tried his very best to sing as well.. In the concerts, and in Tv shows..

I'll try my best to read all the articles...

Ah, no. They say that fans, and even the SMAP band members themselves joke about not being able to sing.

Here's what they said: "While western "boy bands" are not necessarily known for their musical talent, even SMAP fans agree that their idols simply cannot sing. As one fan put it on a website dedicated to the band, Nakai's inability to sing is somewhat of a national joke today in Japan. (3) Members of the band themselves frequently joke about being out of tune in live performances and express a lack of confidence in their own singing ability."

Besides, there's this thing about "trying your best" and "what position/ability you really have". Let's take Sorimachi-san as an example. His voice is good for deep tones, but he can't sing higher tones for the life of him. He really tries hard, you can hear, and he puts his everything into the songs - but that still doesn't make him a good singer.
I think you can say a similar thing about SMAP. It's a price you pay with having to be multi-talented rather than focussing on one aspect alone. Like, think about what a talented actor like Kimura-san could do if he would have the time for more acting in better parts. He can't afford to take off several months for filming (like, Sorimachi-san is in Mongolia right now for three months filming a movie about Ghengis Khan), Kimura-san has a singing career to maintain, concerts that are in planning, weekly shows to shoot. In short, he's dancing on all parties but can't enjoy the food.

Hehe, who knows. Perhaps it also has to do with that part of the essay:

Aware of his reputation as a sex object, Kimura often plays with this construction. He generally is the first to take his shirt off in concert and frequently teases the audience by sticking his tongue out or suggestively touching himself. (8) On his evening radio show, he also likes to talk about his masturbating habits (he claims having once masturbated 17 times in a day), sexual prowess (eight times in a day), or consumption of pornography (borrowed from other SMAP members).

With that kind of "exercise", and no food on the parties, yes, he must be skinny. :beatyou:

Everyone likes to take off shirts in the concerts, except Goro-Chan...

Yeah it's true.

Though I do notice that Goro-chan does that in doramas...:) Not complaining in any way. :hehe:

Must be because there are no screaming fangirls and fanboys while shooting a drama... :nut:
