I've got a nearly 4-years-old computer:

- Pentium III 700Mhz
- an MSI mobo
- 512 ram
- Gainward GF2 MX 32MB
- pci network card
- Seagate Barracuda II 20GB + Barracuda IV 80GB
- Sony 52x cd-rom
- Pioneer DVR-106D
- crappy Labtec microphone (never used it)
- Samsung Syncmaster 152S 15" panel with integrated speakers (ok for me, I'm no hifi fetish)
- Koss Porta Pro. I use the headphones mostly when I'm using the comp. The sound won't disturb the other family members and privacy as well ;)
- Windows 2000

I have upgraded a few times since the purchase. There won't be another upgrade, this is the last lineup. The comp plays divx smootlhy, but lags at wmv 9, ugh! Could care less about the wmv 9. I have no use for it.
I seldom play CS these days, maybe a few hrs per month.
The comp has served me for all these years. I plan to use the comp for another 2 years or so. A Centrino portable shall replacement my current precious :) Small and convenient.

Btw My boss gave me an old Canon scanner at work today.

There has been a poll about operating systems, not "what hardware you got"-thread before as far as I remember. A member got a "picture of my comp"-thread before.

Right now I'm still using this pc:

Celeron 466
Abit BH6
384MB ram
Matrox G450 DH 32MB (tv-out)
Segate 120gb, Maxtor 60gb, Quantum 12gb
Lite-ON 40x12x48x cdrw
cheap case
Samsung 950p monitor
Logitech Z-540 speakers
Win XP Pro

But, in two days I'll be finally using a new pc after a long overdue upgrade which is:

Athlon XP 2500+
MSI K7N2-DELTA-L (nForce2 Ultra 400)
512mb ddr333 (2x256) dual channel
another cheap case
other parts from old computer

Can't wait!

yeong84 wrote:what do you mean picky about media? Does it only want the expensive kind of DVDs?
More quality media, safer bet. It depends on the burners. Some cheap blank dvd may cause an error on burning or a dvd-drive not able to read the content or takes helluva time to read it.

IkematsuSosuke wrote:Sorry for making another thread..didnt see this one around. gomen.
It's ok. No harm done.

IkematsuSosuke wrote:How much are you guys paying for a 50bundle of blank DVD-R discs?
I paid 50 euros for a 25 Verbatim datalifeplus dvd-r. Not bad! These are the quality discs. My modded PS2 reads the discs :)

I think I have about 7 computers in various states of disrepair. All running Linux.

My two main boxes are both dual cpu PII-450's with 1GB RAM and about 6 SCSI drives each. They were decent boxes back a few years ago, but they are so freakin loud I put them in a closet, and run extension cables to my desk. When I open the closet door a blast of hot air comes out. If the cops take an I/R signature of my house, they'll probably think I have a huge dope farm in here. I'm probably frying the disks, but who cares, I got my money's worth a long time ago. An old Dell Optiwreck with a 130GB IDE drive which holds my current video media, and serves as my CD burner. Another old Dell PII-400 is my firewall + router + proxy + web/mail/DNS server.

I have a couple laptops with busted screens, one is a Panasonic Let's Note, with a Japanese keyboard, and it was a great little laptop. Now I just use it with an external monitor when I watch jdoramas in my bedroom. My only functional laptop is a Sony picturebook.

I really need to get rid of all my old junk and get some new hardware. My electricity bill will probably go down! :)

I'm glad to see Fenrir is another Linux user ... Go Linux! :)

question:
do all DVD burners able to dvd-copy a, let's say "sen to chihiro no kamikakushi" 1 for one? If I want to make a back up of a store bought DVD, is that possible? What software would i need to make this happen? Would Nero be suffice?

Groink and/or dvdrhelp.com would be able to give you a detailed answer.

With my current limited knowledge on the subject, I think it's dependent on the source. If the DVD is a single-layer disc, then you should be able to do a 1:1 copy with DVD copy-capable program. If the DVD is dual-layered, then you'll need a program like DVD Shrink to fit all that info on to one DVD, since you can't buy and/or burn a dual-layered disc...

From Yahoo! News:

NEW YORK (AP) - If you just bought a DVD-burning drive for your computer and think that for once you're current with the latest and greatest, it's disappointment time.

Manufacturers will soon launch drives that can store double the amount of data on a disc. Sony Electronics says it will ship drives in about two months that accept blank DVDs with two data layers. Philips Electronics will start selling a similar drive in Europe in April, but is not saying when it will be available in the United States.

The write-once discs can store up to 8.5 gigabytes of data, or about four hours of DVD-quality movies, twice the capacity of regular blank DVDs. This means capacities for computer-burned DVDs are catching up with prerecorded movie DVDs, many of which are already dual-layer.

The new technology is sure to appeal to those who back up or copy movie DVDs, since they often have to reduce image quality or remove special features to fit a copied movie onto a single-layer disc. With a dual-layer drive, an exact copy on a single disc should be possible.

The software used to copy encrypted movie DVDs is illegal in the United States, according to recent court rulings.

The two layers of the new discs are accessed from the same side - there is no need to flip the disc over to record to the second layer. Instead, a laser beam shines through the first layer to record on the second.

Sony will sell an internal drive for $230 US and an external one for $330. They will be marketed only for Windows PCs, but the external one should work on Macintosh (news - web sites) computers with the proper third-party software.

Philips will sell two internal drives with somewhat different features, both for PCs. U.S. prices have not been set.

The drives will be able to burn regular write-once and rewritable DVDs and CDs as well.

The Sony and Philips drives will use somewhat different discs. Sony calls its variant DVD-R DL. The Philips equivalent is DVD+R DL. Both disc types should be readable in standard DVD drives and players.

Sony estimates the blank discs will cost $5 to $6. Philips does not have an estimate yet.

The dual-layer discs will be slower to burn than single-layer discs - the drives will be rated as burning at 2.4 times faster than playback speed, versus eight times for single-layer discs.

A full 8.5 gigabytes will take about 45 minutes to burn.
