groink wrote:Second, if you know of anyone in the Navy or Marines... See if they know of any used computers being sold within their command by Electronic Data Systems or EDS. EDS is the owner of the contract running the Navy/Marine Computer Intranet or NMCI network. What's happening there is that EDS bought up all of the Pentium 4 machines from what we refer to as the "quarantine" network, and they're converting the users to new Pentium 4 machines to be used under NMCI.hey kouseiya, isn't there a navy yard out in philly?
This past month, I bought five Dell Pentium 4 systems for $325.00 each. Included in each system are: Pentium 4 1.7GHz processor, 256MB RAM, 40GB hard disk, ATI Rage AGP video, USB keyboard and mouse, and 17-inch tube-style monitor. Best yet, it still has 1.5 years of warranty still left on everything (Department of the Navy buys 3-year warranties for all systems purchased). I'd imagine there are several Navy and Marine ports in your state, so I'd check this source out!

You would need to know someone who works there, either a GI, a contractor (like me) or a government worker. Hell, I know of a girl somewhere near London who once admitted to dating a guy just because he had great computer equpiment... Yes, COMPUTER EQUIPMENT, not the other equipment! LOL!!!! So maybe you can check out some of the guys there... :naughty: :naughty: I'm soooo bad! :(

Nor do I wanna play with sailors to get a cheap computer, LOL. :shakehead: I did have a friend in the Navy, but he was assigned in some town outside of Jacksonville, FL and he finished his 4 years up this past August.
For the Macintosh, it really depends on which OS you're running.
For Mac OS 9 or earlier, you'll need to first install the Japanese Language Kit (JLK). I have a copy of it I can mail to you if you need it. This will install the Japanese fonts (TrueType) and other utilities.
For Mac OS X 10.0 or later, virtually any word processor will work, JUST AS LONG as it's native Mac OS X software (Microsoft Word X, etc.) If the word processor is running Mac OS 9 emulation, you'll need to upgrade the word processor to a native Mac OS X version.
From there, the Japanese fonts are already built into Mac OS X -- you just need to enable the language. I'm not in front of my Mac right now, so when I get home I'll jot down the steps to enable it.

Hiya,
I have Mac OS 10.3 Panther and pretty much as Groink said...since OS X, everything has been built in. As for the capability to type them, go to your system preference and click on "INTERNATIONAL" which is located under PERSONAL. Click on Input Menu. Make sure you click on the Japanese Kotoeri fonts and the other Japanese related ones and that's it.
On the top section where you see your date and time, you will see the US Flag. Whenever you want to type in Japanese. Click on that and the drop down menu will feature the kana selections or kanji. That's it!

actually, the only problem i have now is actually seeing the japanese when i type.....the arigatougozaimashita i typed in the previous post comes out as strange symbols in the message box. i think it may have something to do with the character setting on my computer. for some reason it is always set on japanese shift jis....cant change it...not sure why.

Easiest way - turn off Messenger service
The easist way to stop receiving this kind of message is to turn off Windows Messenger service. If you are running Windows XP, following these steps:
1. Click Start button on your toolbar.
2. Click Run...
3. Enter "Services.msc" (without quotation marks) and click OK.
4. Browse the list till you find "Messenger" in Name column
5. Right click and click "Stop" on the pop up menu. That is not all. If you don't want the service to start the next time you start your computer, continue with the following steps:
6. Double click it. The Messenger Properties (Local Computer) dialog box comes out.
7. Choose "Disable" in "Startup type" drop down box.
8. Click OK.
other way is (temporarily, you must do this everytime you log to net)
1. Start -> Run -> cmd.exe
2. Then type the following "net stop messenger" after which you'll see "messenger service is stopping".
To start it again for any reason open the command prompt again (Start -> Run -> cmd.exe) and type "net start messenger"

Actually its something MS wrote. Originally I think it was meant to be used as a LAN messenger or something. But people found a way to exploit and use it as a spam tool.
my sister wont let me come to this web site on her computer because she thinks there are viruses, and she doesnt have file walls or something, . she said since i went to the site on her comp she got 62 viruses.

Drag. :(

It's "firewall", not file walls :)
But even a firewall isn't full protection because many viruses come via email. You can also pick up annoying spyware by downloading and installing some software that contains it.
It is very unlikely you'd get a virus from this site.
Hi! Pls help me, I have a problem with my computer. :( I left my computer on yesterday night with BT application on to dl stuff. After I came back to check my computer, my computer was shut down. I turned on my computer and started to dling again. After a while I hear this clicking from my HD. Then my computer just freeze and when I restart my computer again, I got an error report, saying that my computer has been through a system error?
The error gave my something like C:\\Windows\Minidump\Mini041404-01.dmp. What is that? And does this have to do with my BT?
Also I'm wondering maybe it was something I dled. Cos at the current time of the shut down I was dling a file (eg. episode 21 from a series). It finished dling in the morning. When I played the file (ep21) the same clicking sound from my HD came back.
Please help me! :mecry: Thanks.

i think your hard drive is getting bad. (or atleast where that file is stored).
something like this happened to me before, so what i did was run scandisk and fixed errors, and defrag the hard drive after that.
groink will probably post shortly. he's the computer wiz.. :hehe:
