You should qualify for an educational discount. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Dell offers student discounts on their desktops and laptops, all you gotta do is calll them.

Don't mean to offend "supporters", but from my experience, DELL is sh*tty. There is always problems. I've used them at work for over 2 years. Idk, always seems like I (and other coworkers) had some type of problem with them. I would invest a little more money and get something that doesn't mess around with you as much.

whaddu u suggest??

I know I am biased, but this Sony Vaio that I've had (for about a year and a half) has served me well. No problems, whatsoever. My wife's Sony Vaio laptop, which she had since 1997 has not given her any problems either.
But apparently, you are not satisfied with Sony. Hmmm, ever tried Toshiba?
An HP computer that we had at (one of) my jobs crashed the other week. And it was less than one year old.
Idk, but HP and Dell are ‚¾‚ß in my book.

I'd agree with you there, Aho: we've got a couple of Dell desktops and laptops and they've failed in one way or another... Plus they're packed with that custom Dell software which bites...

From what I've seen, any PC from a major manufacturer has these quirks such that if you want to upgrade hardware, you can't, 'cause of incompatibilities... So you end up having to upgrade through the manufacturer, or worse, buy another PC. :bleh:

Yea go Sony! I've always loved Sony products :hehe: :hehe: Although I usually build my desktops, I wouldn't mind purchasing a laptop from Sony, especially their tiny notebooks :D

my opinion .. dell and HP -- no way !!

toshiba laptops are good, but i dont like there sound system. although the original compaq compaq used to have a hell of a sound system, with jbl speakers was really cool.

I have an IBM thinkpad, new one, and really like it. very stable machine, lots n lots of added features which are IBM made and thus fully integrated with the machine, very good security features like encoding the data on disk, bios level password protection, and as i said before hard disk is shock resistant.

although i do luv sony machines also, never had them but always heard good of them, especially like the T series in beige color !!! infact the new ones give excellent battery life also

IBM thinkpad... *shivers*

:hehe: :hehe:

Haven't had the best experience with them but hopefully, and I sure do hope they've made some strides from the one I used at NASA.

I like sony's design, very slimline....

@bmw: I know they got crap on their computers but you must admit it is cheap. What we do is buy the laptop, then format it and do a clean install... :hehe: No more Dell programs!!... :victory:

damn..how come my sony comp and digital camera are both acting up??
they were expensive too, ....well actually, my somewhat rich friend gave me this one, after 3 months bcs mines was old, and she already had two others.
ive been having such bad luck lately, omg, did i break a mirror er something??

Yeah, that'll work. But you can't do an install using their bundled software, 'cause then you're back wehre you started, ne?

I'm with Elt: build your own. You know what you're getting and there's no one to blame but yourself if it craps out. :hehe:

I build my own as well, but my friend recently purchased a laptop from Dell and said that the drivers are on a sepearte disc from the programs. So you can install the drivers only.

How do you build your own? Just buy different components of different brands and put 'em all together? Idk. Sorry, computer illiterate person on board. :beaten:

ah yes !!! ... well i have always heard good of them and well :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: no probs with mine yet. luv the kbd and mouseclick

thats another thing i dont like in Dell, the mouse click button is too hard, dont know abt sony, but compaq used to be good for it too.

Exactly.

That way you can choose the best and/or most economical parts for your machine...

That's a little trickier. :hehe:

Aside from the portability, I don't like laptops. They seem to be inherently trouble-prone... :bleh:
