Hmm, I'm not sure if I know exactly what you are asking. But a process that is hanging will probably be consuming all of the CPU. You can get to the Task Manager easily by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Under the Processes tab, you can see the CPU usage. The bad process will likely have a CPU usage of about 99. Highlight it, then End Process. Hopefully that will release your stuck computer.
thanks ... yeah i know all about how to do it.. it is not a 99% cpu eating problem. i had created a folder, put stuff in it, then moved the stuff to another folder. now it wont let me delete the prev folder. happens sometimes in XP i have seen, now either i reboot which i do ofcourse OR if i can catch hold of the process locking it the can end it.
so was just wondering if someone knews of something to do instead of logoff/reboot.

If only that worked as advertised: there's always a number of processes that won't even let you kill 'em...
Time to hit the reset button.
ammm those ones are generally really critical ones else system cant work. in general i have seen u can end most processes even a lot of system processes if u want

Sometimes it's just ones that won't let you kell 'em: I was using this hex editor yesterday and it gobbled up all of my system memory... I tried to kill it and it wouldn't die... Argh.
Had to stop that monkey with the good ol' reset button. :hehe:

They are mostly caused by Javascript code. Simple solutions, use Firefox instead of IE, get a popup blocker (the Google toolbar has one, for example) or install Service Pack 2 if you have XP.
IE6 with SP2 installed added a pop-up blocker as well so u can use that if u dont want to use firefox. I tried firefox before and it works great except for the fact that some websites doesn't display properly on it (as their only tested on IE, :grumble: ).

So, if you Google for "lsof" and "Windows", you'll find a number of utilities that help you do what you want.

After installing the extension, when you come across a problem page, just right click and choose the view in IE menu item. IE will then open a window displayng that page.

Oh man yeah ... i understand when u say Argh ... it pisses me off so much when something F..'s up because of this stupid OS .. especially when these stuck ups happen ... gets on my nerves

thanks a lot man! ... will try it out .. yeah i wanted some utility which can basically map the process to the app's so i know where is the stuckup !
cheers !

This is so that I can get a feel of what improvements I need to make from my side in regards to future video capturing, such as switching codec/compression methods, etc.If anyone still cares about this original question, here are some stats from the April web logs for the California board: 70% Windows XP
13% Windows 2000
8% Windows 98
3% Windows ME
2% Linux
2% Mac OS X[/list:u] Most surprising to me is that Windows 2003 is at just 0.1%.
I would expect Windows percentages for JDorama.com might be a bit lower since Microsoft is not quite so dominant outside of the U.S. and since JDorama.com gets a higher percentage of international visitors than the California board, where 79% of the pageviews are from the U.S.
Interesting statistics. The one with Windows 2003 being only 0.1% isn't as surprising considering that it is mainly a server OS, and is not preinstalled in most computers that consumers purchase. Also even if Microsoft is as dominating outside the US, it is still the OS in terms of numbers, even internationally.
dochira wrote:Also even if Microsoft is as dominating outside the US, it is still the OS in terms of numbers, even internationally.Oh, true, true. Just not by as much. There's a correspnding signficant different in browser usage surveys depending on whether the surveys are U.S.-only or not.
Uhmmm, it's extremly dominant in Europe. You basically can't buy a new computer without having MS on it (least in Germany and Austria, but I doubt it's much different in the other countries). The problem is, many people are too lazy or lack the know-how to get a blank machine. I admit, I'm usually one who's too lazy. Then again, I do have a Linux machine too. Heck lol, I have one machine running on AMIGA DOS lol.
And even though I'm not really a fan of MS, I admit, my XP machine is running flawlessly. Not one crash, not one bluescreen since I set it up.

Not really a surprise though. You have to say "thank you" to the techs on several universities. At least in Austria they're installing a different browser on new computers (usually those used for public access) that are bought for their university (in old days it was Netscape, today it's Firefox). They've been doing that for years.
AHHH my computer is whack. Moved this to the appropriate topic.

Nope. Filling a hard drive should not be bad for it.

Wow. After one year, the guy finally got his answer. :beaten: :hehe:
On another note, that's a good thing to know, 'cause my comp is out of space already. Only 100MG left. :beaten:
