It's not necessarily "not good," it was the top of the line technology back then. We've evolved since...and why I continue to have a job. ;)

True. Amazing how fast technology develops, eh? Scary to think what lies ahead in the future.

hello not sure if this is the right place to ask but does anyone know which program to use to rip audio from a dvd/avi? i remember someone told me its virtualdub or something.. is that pretty good?
20 Oct 2005, 09:19 #1345
you can do just about anything with virtualdub But yes you can rip audio from it, I don't think you would have to demux it.

I use VirtualDubMod to rip/demux audio from AVI files and use Womble MPEG Video Wizard to demux audio from MPEG2/DVD files.

Check videohelp.com imoto-chan... They've got tutorials. :)

Demux=demultiplex: basically, separating the audio and video tracks from each other.

Mux=multiplex: Merging the audio and video tracks together. :)

Demux is short for demultiplex. The best analogy I can think of is the exit ramps from a freeway. It separates a portion of all the cars. The freeway is the video and audio, the exit is just the audio. What's left is the video.

The opposite is mux'ing, or multiplexing. Using the same analogy, it's the on ramp to the freeway. You combine the audio, video together.

Just rotated my screen 90 degs into portrait mode. Nothing beats looking at the website at 1200x1600 without having to scroll. :hehe:

I'm still getting used to the new format.

went to Fry's Elect. they had some good external harddrives there for about $150-$300 for a 160 gb to a 400 gb harddrive. Would save a lot on dvd's, and a good back up for all the data(pix, dramas, etc..)
probably will hold off in getting one now, but will keep it in mind for an external hd as a backup/for more storage space. :hehe:

It will be cheaper to get an external drive case, and then add your own drive. I saw a Firewire/USB2 case fror $30 no rebate, and it can hold a hard disk or DVD drive. I might pick one up on my way home later.

that's a rip off man.....don't buy that shiet..you can find external drives much cheaper online...i bought an external drive with a 250GB storage capacity for about 150 and that was ages ago....

sh*t, i just saw an INTERNAL hard drive for sale online.....300GB for 94 dollars....now that's cheap.

Q, build your own ext hd... for example, $50 for the 200gb Seagate on sale (after rebate) and buy a $40 USB2 ext case, and for $90, you'd have more storage if than if you bought a premade branded one.
I did that with all of mine, and i spend at least half of what a premade one would have been.

i bought a 4 bay RAID tower years ago.. since i dont use SCSI much anymore, i tore out the interface, bought a FW800 controller and 4 160gb Barracuda's.

After rebate it was less than $300, of course, not including the cost of the original case.

thanks for the recommendations...on the external drives

first off, don't really want to mess with an internal hd, i prefer an external one.
also, i am not good at all with computers, and i don't want to hassle with contructing anything, in terms of building the hd together.

i'll probably just wait for awhile and keep price searching. just the concept sounds good for now, keeping an entire backup of all your files on an external hd, plus additional storage. It'll be good incase your computer goes down, got all the files backed up.

i suppose saving files onto dvd is good for now as back up....just takes up space and time to save them. :bonk:
