I've always considered Aho's topic as something like writing a letter to the editor of a newspaper about something you're concerned about.

Some good things about a shout box:

1) The chatter is temporary stored, and will disappear later on. There's a small buffer that acts like a FIFO queue (first in, first out). So when the queue fills up, the oldest item is removed.

2) It's right there in front of you when you enter JDorama.com. Very quick access!

3) When you see your friends on-line, you can basically chat with each other in semi-real time (it refreshes every one minute, or how ever many seconds the administrator sets it). On the topics, you'd have to keep re-freshing the lists, waiting for a response (this practice eats up bandwidth on JDorama.com).

I think in just about every forum there is some thread that becomes a random chat thread and in our case it's Aho's "Got Something to Say Thread". While the shoutbox may be beneficial, I personally would rather stick to tradition and use the "Got Something to Say Thread". It just seems nicer to communicate over a thread rather than a chatterbox

Sorry. My intention of that thread was for misc. gibberish. Like a chatroom type of forum. Maybe I should re word it or something? 'Cause maybe since you feel that way of the thread, then others will too?!

Personally, I don't really wait for a response at all. I go onto the next topic (and post there) that I find interesting. If someone replies to a previous post, then cool. Idk. One of the reasons I utilize the PM function is if I want a response. Other reasons are for personal or confidential gibberish.

having a shoutbox in a forum doesnt make sense at all, ive seen a few who has that and i dont see any point having one.. whats the point of Private Messages to interact individually or the whole messageboards to discuss other things if theres a shoutbox? :headscratch:
16 Oct 2004, 20:00 #225
The shoutbox has a different purpose. Like what its called, its for you to shout out. Such posts don't necessarily require replies, and are also not meant to be kept/archived.

E.g. "arghghgh!! i'm so borrreD!"

So, lets not judge suggestions too quickly. Its not a bad suggestion. Even though we may not adopt it eventually, something good may actually spawn out of it.

i dont mean to be judgemental, i was just trying to say what everyone else's said that you can just express anything on Aho's thread, and what i said previously about having a shoutbox in a forum, is kinda pointless, maybe bec. i can chat with the other members on yahoo, msn, aim, pm..etc.

but just bec. i have express my opinion that doesnt mean groink's suggestion isnt important, when you think about it, it is pretty useful for other guests who're non-members, for those who just want to join just the heck of it but they normally dont visit the forum anymore, either they are lazy or have login problem purposes, the shoutbox might probably useful for them to interact with us members.

now what do you guys think? i just dont want to see any troll who'd abuse it like spam our shoutbox (i can smell that from a mile away), can we at least ban people who anonymously spam it since we dont ban people in this friendly forum anyway?

Yea I'm with you on this mixx. Just as an example, I have friends with xangas and stuff and like random people post obscene stuff on them and it gets kind of annoying. Hard to regulate. I can see how shoutboxes are useful like on d-addicts where people request for a torrent to be reseeded or something, but for conversation, it's really impersonal.

All I can say is "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" :)

I need just a few more postings from you people saying the shout box is a bad idea, then I'll be a happy camper. :)
18 Oct 2004, 11:44 #230
I wouldn't say it's a bad idea, more than it might be an idea we're sorta using already in a slightly different form... :)

groink, I think I know what your intent is on this one. Is this suggestion meant to avoid off topic postings to be posted?! (If I'm wrong, then I'm sorry) I agree with you that we go off topic a lot on this board.

A shoutbox could be beneficial, but (IMO) not on this forum.
People here are really nice and it's pretty much a troll free board. I mean, every now and then we get our share of trolls, but they disappear really quickly after a while. I think if we had a shoutbox, like elt and Mixx said, it just may encourage more trolls to come along, as they may know that a shoutobox will be difficult to regulate.
(IMO)Things are okay the way it is.

I just think that the shoutbox will do more harm than good. (IMO)Offtopic posting is nothing compared to having trolls, or losers who post random stuff and pornography like pictures in a shoutbox.

I know you mean well and it's a nice suggestion. :)

I personally feel off topic post are kind of funny. We all need to relax so it's no big deal to go off topic once in a while. Things would get so boring if everything was uniform. Take the artist threads for example. We don't always talk about Aya in the Aya-chan thread. For the most part it's pics and discussion about her but once in a while it totally goes off topic and I don't mind at all. It's just natural to talk randomly at times and it isn't meant to degrade the thread or anything. Well there goes another two cents :hehe:

Sorry, offtopic posting.

eltinator wrote:Well there goes another two cents :hehe:

Aww. That's all you had left and then.... :P
:hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

Back on topic. Sometimes, I think you can't say things through PM because it'll lose it's effect. Like times when you come back with a snappy reply. If you post it, the effect is there more than if you'd have done it via PM. Idk, just my (last) two yen (too). :hehe:

No, you hit it on the nail. Even though in my head I wasn't thinking of the posts as being off-topic, there are more topics that become overwhelmed with chat-like dialog.

From what several of you have mentioned, the chat topic you created serves the purpose of having chat-like dialog. If the chat-like noise was kept in that topic, I wouldn't have brought up the shout box idea. Unforutnately, for me, this style of posting does become somewhat bothersome. So much so, I've avoided creating new topics, such as a Japanese enka topic, to avoid them from being bombarded by this sort of thing.

However, from the feedback I've seen, the chatter is not a problem at all, and it's a part of JDorama.com overall character. And, because I'm the only one publicly voicing his opinion about it, I assume everyone else is fine with the way things are. So I accept that and will tolerate it better.

Beyond this post, please do not post any more. I totally understand now and will continue to enjoy the board, and it is no longer productive to keep reminding me about the suggestion. So I apologize for everything.

On a lighter note, I like your avatar groink... (example of off-topic posting) :hehe: :hehe:

Naw it's cool groink, don't worry about it ;)

Anyways, a good way to keep trolls out of jdorama is to take down the bridges :hehe: :hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

<------- Trying to make a joke, lol :hehe:

I agree. There must be some spice. Let's keep it dynamic and no uniform as elt was saying. Off topic posts are nice but let's not abuse the goodness of this forum. The more we try to lock things down, the more challenging it will get for the bad guyz.

i saw this feature in some forums wherein in the profile thing there's an option for u to put ur own pic..

i think that would be very helpfull for genma to remove those pm he got for people who wanna add, delete or change their pics in the Member pics thread.
