Nothing ridiculous about literacy tests.

Had I ever passed one I wouldn't be spending the day installing a hard wood floor.

My Geezerly old knees haven't hurt this bad, or looked this scary since I gave up roofing.

But that's the problem. This Literacy test is STANDARDIZED. When will these people realize that not everyone is the same. I think it's ridiculous and I can't understand why we have one. I supervised a group of Voc kids taking the test for the second time, and I'm sure they've failed it a second time. You can't expect a kid who can't sit still, who can't read, who is on meds, who has a learning disability, who can't retain information like the others, etc. sit through the same test as those who don't have these problems.

Students in academic classes learn the stuff that will show up on the literacy test. Voc kids don't. I think it's unfair and cruel. Why are we setting up these students for failure? I think the literacy test should be a course instead. And not a test. I hold by what I said: it's ridiculous. No teacher would ever agree to it.

Another government failure. Not the first time and it won't be the last one. :hehe:

I think they're doing education reforms every 4 years over here. They don't even have time to implement it, then another party goes into power and change everything... again. :crazy2:

I was one of the lucky 1st here to have a mandatory French test like that to go into University, even if all the classes and books are in English. We had like 3 hours to write 5 or 6 pages about something. With -0,5 point at every spelling and grammar errors, I ended up with a score of 15 ~ 20%. :beaten:

Now, I can't even write a sentence without making 3 grammar errors or using words that don't even exist. :ashamed: I'm pretty much screwed.

WOW! Thank gawd they got rid of that! I woulda failed for sure. I got my French credit in grade nine (with a 61%) and then never took French again. :bleh:

I would never have made it into Uni if there was a French entrance exam. :shakehead:

I hear you, Wyn-chan :(

My son is unfortunately in the minority you described above. He absolutely crashes every time exams come around, because he's just not the kind of kid who does well in exams. It also depends a lot on the teacher with him, unfortunately. We had parent/teacher interviews last week, and a few teachers totally amazed us by telling us how great he is doing and that they expect good marks from him this year. No coincidence that they are the teachers he likes and gets on with :)

I wish he could have you as a teacher, Wyn-chan. I'm sure he would like you and you'd get the best out of him.

Arigato :glomp:. But what's sad, A-Oyaji, is that there are teachers out there who just don't care anymore. Teachers who WON'T get the best out of your son. Usually these teachers have been teaching for decades and my biggest fear is that I'll turn into them when I get age. >_<

One of his teachers is just the opposite: Well, not exact opposite - he has a Doctorate in *something* and all these letters after his name, but this is his first teaching job and he's over 40. Undoubtedly a very smart man, but cannot relate to the kids at all and can't handle them - so they walk all over him, and kids like my son who aren't motivated or independent workers suffer. Another teacher is the wife of the principal, and in one case refused to apologise to my son although she was proven to be in the wrong about an issue, and her husband backed her up when Mrs A.D. fronted him about it!! :banghead:

I'm sure you'll never turn out like that, Wyn-chan, from all you post it's easy to tell you love the kids - it's some other teachers and the system you have issues with :)

Unfortunately Sensei, that doesn't apply to just the teaching profession, we've got a couple here that are just "running out the clock" waiting for retirement. Not good for morale, I just try to ignore them as much as possible :beaten: [/list:u]
