that's obvious....hollywood's continued cultural ignorance continues with its monotholic portrayal of asians, as if any and all asian cultures are interchangeable.....it's like saying all Latin Americans are Mexicans.
just because they continue to make the same stupid mistakes doesn't somehow rationalize the stupidity....
it's like seeing any dummy off the street call any asian a chinese person....it's ridiculous and stupid for the average man though he may be uneducated.....but hollywood producers have millions of dollars at their disposal and opportunities for thorough research and review...yet they make the same dumb, offensive mistakes.
edit: they used Koyuki for Last Samurai...hell nobody in the States knew who the heck she was prior to filming.
i understand where you're coming from and agree. but i don't think its as major a deal as is made out despite this.
how many films have we seen where you get someone from another nationality playing the role of a chracter? mel gibson isn't a scot but played a scot, jeremy irons isn't a german but played one, and you can go on...
as long as its not a huge difference in appearance then i don't think its that big a deal. after all, its acting, and requires people to act like someone else, even if its a different nationality.
i mean people didn't watch braveheart and shout out "thats terrible, can't you spot the difference between an australian and a scot!"
i mean i'm british, but if you shove a bunch of american and british people in the same room together and told me to say where they all come from, i would struggle! aside from obvious differences like dress and accent many british could pass for american and vice versa.
i'm not saying japanese and chinese people look the same, heaven forbid! but i'm putting some perspective on this.
