I assume the one I linked is a newer version of the one amrayu had, because hers capped in MPEG-1, while the one I linked does MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. I would hope there would be improvements? Maybe? :puppydog:
yes, the one i had, was very old (back in 1998 it was released??)
although, im not a fan of mpeg1 or mpeg2 capture devices/cards. :bleh:
here's something you can do, buy it from an online store, that lets you do open box returns. :) if you are not satisfied, just return the sucka..
but yah, you should look into a dvd recorder, they are getting cheap now. i figure the external capture device is kind of pricey no?? (since most external devices are pricey).
as for dvd burners, yes i reccommend the Pioneer!! :) i had the dvr 105, but that busted because of doing distro. :shamefulcry:
i just bought one of the newer pioneer models, dvr107? (i think). it's 16x, and burns dual layer also. And about ur question about dual layer burners: yes, they burn single layer dvd-rs/dvd+rs. :)
:usuck: stupid double post.

The 16X DL Pioneer is the 108, I think....

Quick chime. You don't by any chance use on-board video (as opposed to a separate video card). The 64MB difference is probably due to shared memory. On-board video uses RAM as its own memory. Greedy, aren't they?
Ahhh....that would be it, thanks!

Yep! That's the one I'm feenin' for!!! :dancing: $116??? NOT BAD. OMG, I want it now :shamefulcry:

Good idea! I'm also checking out Ebay too. They are MUCH cheaper on Ebay. If I can pay less than $50 for it, I'd be REALLY cool. I haven't seen them go for more than $60 on Ebay yet (for this particular model which is one of the latest), even for sealed boxes. Then if it sucks, I can always resell it too :victory: I'd only use the MPEG-2 option, not MPEG-1 :bleh:
I'm considering a DVD recorder when they come down just a tad more and after I get a real job and settle my finances more. The thing is, I want one of the hard drive ones so I can do stuff/save before blowing media. From what I saw, the Panasonic ones are still around $400-$500 with the hard drive built in. Before then, I'd just like to putz around with a capture card.
Thanks for everyone's help! :victory: (this is my favorite damn smilie now)

For me, the computer is still a better capturing device. I do have the Panasonic DMR-E80H, and it works well. However, it doesn't allow me to capture in progressive or non-interlaced mode. And, the MPEG-2 encoder is not the best thing in the World, especially when you re-rip within the unit (ex: dubbing XP to SP). The only good thing about the unit is that:
1) It doesn't crash on me, so it's a great backup system to my primary system (PC).
2) Scheduling my recordings is more reliable.
3) For a very quick recording solution, you can't beat it. I use it to record my less important things, such as golf tournaments, and recordings for friends.
4) Reliable when you go on a trip for a couple of weeks because, even with a power loss, it will power back on when the electricity returns (I still recommend connecting both your PC and DVD recorder UPS units).

Good catch. :applaud:
Hmm, I didn't think any mobo manufacturers were putting video on the boards anymore... Guess I was wrong. :bonk:
Folks,
Just installed the new Lite-On 16x DVD burner. :woot:
Copied 12 DivX episodes of Say You Love Me to my hard drive. Verified that the HDD copy is fine, played samples of the episodes on my PC using Windows Media Player.
Then ran Nero to burn these episodes to a Memorex DVD+R 8x blank at 8x speed.
Nero said it completed the burn successfully. :dancing:
However, when I play it on my Philips 642 DVD/DivX player, the image looks all pixelated. The sound is fine. :banghead:
Any ideas what's wrong?
Thanks,
PCM

PCM, we've got a burning/encoding thread: http://jdorama.com/viewtopic.5900.htm
That said, does your Philips player support the DivX version you recorded the DVDs in?
Also, it's after that fact, but I always burn a DVD-RW first as a check before burning a bunch of DVD-Rs...
I think we might need some more info on the source of the files. Of course make sure the files are DivX instead of XviD. But yeah, check the bitrates too. It might just be that the DVD player doesn't handle these specific files well or that they aren't good qualilty to begin with...

Okay, if one of the Moderators could move this thread, that'd be cool.
Yeah, I already checked the original DivX DVD and it players fine on my Philips 642 player.

Merged :D
Anyways, maybe the files are encoded with QPEL or GMC since the philips player wont play them. First check the files on your comp to see if they work and if they do then it's not a dvd issue or burning issue. It could just be the player.

Yeah... the original DVD plays fine on my Philips 642.
I copied the DivX files to my PC. They play fine on my PC.
I burned these files to a new DVD+R. Nero said it was a successful burn.
But when I put this DVD+R copy into my Philips, it looks funky.
Hrm, I just tested the DVD+R on my PC, it plays the episodes fine, sound and video. So I guess it's just my Philips 642 that can't seem to handle it. :headscratch:
Tested the DVD+R on my Philips 642 again. It's just episodes 1 and 2 that come out funky. Episodes 3 through 12 are fine. Any ideas?

could be just the dvd then. Maybe try reburning? Don't know if there are issues with the DVP642 and DVD+r. I had that player, well still do and I'm going to return it since it doesnt support QPEL and GMC encodes and there isn't a fix for tv overscan. Right now I'm using a RJ-800 as my divx dvd player. Plays well but the player itself looks pretty cheap
It's on the way:

DivX 6 previewed at CeBit
By Wolfgang Gruener, Senior Editor
March 11, 2005 - 14:25 EST
Hannover - DivX Networks demonstrated its upcoming sixth generation DivX vide digital video format at the CeBit tradeshow. The format is expected into make its way into a range of consumer electronics devices.
The new software is slated to be released in the coming weeks and will add several new features to high-compression functionality of the codec. As it was revealed in beta versions of DivX, the new generation will introduce the format .divx, interactive menus to select chapters within a movie and multiple audio tracks. DivX 6 also includes functionality for subtitles that are enabled through the file format .xsub. The files can be edited similar to ID3 tags in MP3 files.
The new feature list will make the DivX much more attractive to consumer electronics than previous generations of the codec. So it is no surprise that the software already garnered support not only form software developers such as Sonic Solutions, Pinnacle, Roxio and Intervideo, but also chip manufacturers such as Sigma Designs, LSI, Philips as well as system builder Plextor, which announced a PVR supporting the format.
So far, DivX support has been included in more than 20 million shipped consumer devices, according to DivX Networks. The organization however believes that DivX 6 will make its way into a much broader range of devices, including DVD players.

I just tried these same files on my Philips Dvp-642 dvd player. They look funky on my dvd player as well as my computer. When watching it, it looks like a 3rd or 4th generation vhs copy that is how had it looks. And that is on my computer and also on the Philips dvd player.
Folks,
Got a question. I've got some doramas on VCD...
To save space, I want to change them over to DVD...
How do I do this?
Thanks,
PCM

If I recall it's free unless you wanna use some of it's more sophisticated features... Try it out.
