Do you have VobSub installed?

This is what I do typically:

1. Start VirtualDub.
2. Open AVI file to be hardsubbed.
3. Add filter... Select TextSub
4. Open .srt file
5. Choose subtitle font, font size, color, outline width
6. Choose Compression type (I usually use XViD4)
7. Select Single Pass Compression and Best Quality (=1)
8. Select Save AVI

You should get a popup window showing the progress of file being hardsubbed... :)

And the problem is when I choose Video --> Filter --> add filter --> there's no textsub selection or subtitler, what should I do then b-kun??

Hmm, that means VobSub isn't installed or installed correctly if you can't see it in the filters menu...

Okay let me recheck it on my work-pc, because as far as I remember I already installed it when I have trouble for swing girls sub

Yes I already have it installed, maybe the virtual dub that I have is not up to date, I'll d/l the latest then recheck it again

I was helping a friend on the weekend with some HTML stuff (Embedding a Flash video into a HTML page) and I learnt something interesting.
My friend is a video editing professional: Currently he has his own business, filming things like corporate presentations, all the way down to weddings, and authoring/mastering DVD's etc (I would KILL for his equipment, but that's another story :P )
He was re-doing the titles etc and re-burning a DVD of a wedding, on his standalone DVD burner - with a remote control. Apparently it was quicker to do it that way than loading everything into a PC. Anyhow, I asked him what he uses to encode DVD's - he uses Nero for anything just under an hour, or just under 2 hours, and uses his standalone DVD burner, of all things, for everything else. The reason? Nero only has 2 settings for encoding - everything up to an hour is one setting, everything up to two hours is another. So something 1 hour & 5 minutes long is encoded at the same quality as something 2 hours long. Which explains a lot! My attempts at burning 1 1/2 hour video files with Nero always looked crappy, now I know why! At least ConvertXtoDVD doesn't do that: I'm sure it adjusts the encoding rate to the nearest 5 minutes :)

What standalone burner are you talking about? A regular consumer model?

That's why I use TMPGEnc: I can control the encoding quality from the get-go... I never use the VBR (variable bit rate) mode and always use the CQ (constant quality) mode, so it saves time because it doesn't need to make multiple passes through the video for analysis... :)

Yeah, a regular standalone DVD recorder. I can't remember the brand, though.

As cluey as my mate is, he would not consider open-source products. I can guarantee he would not even know about them. He was employed by a local TV station for many years, and was trained on high-end professional gear.

Oftenly if not always speed comes with a price: lower quality.

if your friend is a pro, it's rather disappointing to see him use a one-click program.

Hard to imagine doing that stuff just using the remote...

I know a couple of people like that... Interestingly, they're also Mac users.

I know what you guys mean. You have to remember, though, that he's used to using the best quality gear. So when he set himself up, he had to invest a lot of money in hardware: Several top-line comps with large amounts of ram and a lot of storage, a professional TV/Monitor, a very high-end video card, etc. He also has Adobe Premiere, Adobe Creative Suite Professional, a high-end video camera, etc :) So if something he already has, works, then why go to something else?

I myself find it hard to understand. But then, time is not money for me: If I wanted to, I could spend time messing around with bit rates, experimenting etc. But my mate just needs to get things done as efficiently as possible. As I said, he only uses Nero when he knows the set rate is close to what it would be if he set it himself anyway. I could be wrong about using the standalone DVD burner for everything else. I guess it depends what he's doing at the time.

Anyway, he's been approached to do an interactive CD for a school, and he's asked me to help him. So, there will be some money in it for me.

After watching several of my hardsubbed and authored DVDs on my brother's widescreen LCD HDTV, I really I made a big mistake during the encoding process: I chose the output to be 4:3 and not 16:9...

So when I watch those DVDs on my brohers TV, a 4:3 frame is stuffed into a 16:9 TV, resulting in black vertical bars on either side of the video image... :shakehead:

Looks like I'll have to re-do some of those DVDs, particulary the movies I hardsubbed.

Time to take a week off from work. :beaten:

haha, that sucks. but I guess it's a good lesson not to play around with the original screen ratio.

More like not understanding the little nuances of TMPGEnc.

Doesn't it have an "auto" setting?

Since finding ConvertXtoDVD i've used nothing else.

Nope.

Since finding ConvertXtoDVD i've used nothing else.

Maybe I'll have to look into that... But does it allow compensation for overscan?

If not, the program won't do me any good.
