And in a interesting news, Juri would be appearing in PLAYBOY. O_o Don't believe me? Check out her official site.

'Weekly Playboy' After seeing the cover in this one for once, I'm hoping Juri won't be in the cover...Lol...Anyway, I don't think we should worry too much. It's a Japanese mainstream magazine. Won't be as hardcore as the US version. I hope...It might be male-oriented, but there are still proper articles, entertainment news, manga and stuff in it. I'm kinda curious about what they would be writing about Juri...

Though I would take a playboy anytime :hehe: , I really don't wanna see Juri chan in that..

Hopefully like you said, it would be some kind of article about her and her work with some nice photoshoot (not the normal playboy ones!)

This might help her gather some more male fans who'd be interested in her work.. :victory:

The other pics were posters and these are 'caps, so airbrushing/Photoshopping wasn't possible...

As you can see, she did have some makeup on to deemphasize things a bit.

I still give Juri props for playing a character with GID. Taking on that role obviously would not be as popular or receive as much "buzz" ... but that's what made her decision that much more daring and commendable.

It was a really good performance, but I still think Nodame is her best role, thanks to the writers...

Yea, perhaps among her jdoramas ... but still doesn't trump Swing Girls. :woot:

Plus, it's easy to get typecast as Nodame, so I hope Juri continues to do different characters and expand her career.

I think you misunderstood: I'm saying she got tons of buzz for playing a character with GID... Would she have gotten this much buzz had her character been straight or had she taken on the role that Nagasawa Masami had?

I think not.

I thought that as well, but she clearly proved her versatility with her performance in Last Friends... She's got a long, great career ahead of her. :victory:

Misunderstood indeed ....

Actually, I was thinking the opposite ... perhaps Ruka would've gotten a bit more buzz initially, but I figure Juri playing it straight, figuratively + literally, would actually be more popular to viewers. Seems to me that jdorama fans would be turned off by the subject of GID and eventually lower TV ratings.

I never thought that, 'cause those kinda issues are hot, taboo topics that usually brings people flocking to take a peek, like spectators to a train wreck...

Which by the way, Last Friends was, ultimately. :beaten:

without the GID/lesbian issue (i think lesbian is how it started out, GID was just added in as an afterthought), i don't think the role ruka would have enough to attract juri to accept it. i also don't think she would have taken masami's role, it's just not her thing.

i think that juri (or her agency) has always tried to find the doramas with the most buzz of the season, be it the early Orange Days, the race car/orphanage one that i can't remember the name of, NC or LF. if LF didn't have the buzz, they would've ditched it and taken something else.

anyway, the main effect of the ruka role was it attracted a swarm of fangirls. that can't be all bad... :beaten:

just my $0.02.

I agree... It was a much more challenging role than the soft, weepy role that Masami had.

Not sure about that. :bleh:

If you think about it, most of the Japanese dramas out there these days would have some kind of buzz creating gimmick attached to it. Whether it's a grade school teacher who became the prime minister of Japan...or a girl who suddenly finds herself the owner of a male bishounen robot love slave...or a female school teacher who's also the head of a Yakuza...I think you get guys get what I mean...Last Friends is no different. Young people plague with current social issues, etc. The prospect of Ruka being lesbian/GID undeniably attracted the viewers. But the hard part would be KEEPING the viewers. If you manage to create the buzz but the acting or plotline sucks, there's no use. Ultimately, it was Juri's believable and superb acting as Ruka that kept people watching. Well, that's what I believe anyway. Heh. And for the record, an actress having tons of fangirls(more than fanboys) is really not a bad thing. More than the looks(well, acting a kakkoi character definitely helps~), you've gotta have real talent. But Juri's popularity kinda transcends age and gender...as shows from the graph analysis in the recent Nikkei Entertainment~ =)

Why is that?

Though it is nice that she does appeal to both sexes... :victory: I guess her girl-next-door personality helps in that respect: she doesn't intimidate/put off females like some of the other actresses... :)

Because it takes a lot for a girl to impress another girl? Since females are less likely to be influenced by the outward appearance when it comes to an actress. Just like how it is for a guy to not be easily impressed by an actor based on his appearance. So for an actor or actress to get acknowledged and loved by those from the same gender, it takes real talent. And thus, Juri having lots of fangirls will certainly not be bad thing for her future endeavors. Whatever type of character she plays in the future, she'll have true fans, male or female who will support her. ;)

Something from the Kodomo no Kodomo official site:

Juri as 'Sunakku' no mama. Sunakku comes from Snack. Basically used to denote a bar that have waitresses serving light snacks and alcohol. Sometimes have a shady connotation linked to it since some of them are kinda sleazy...some. The woman who runs the place is the 'mama-san'~ Haha, as expected for Juri to play another unconventional role although her appearance is only around 5 minutes. It'll be shown in the Pusan International Film Festival this October along with GuGu~ More info here and here. Jurism in Korea~
