It's true you'll notice the difference more with better equipment and bigger monitor, because you are essentially blowing it up. But for a 20" monitor, are you sitting 4-5 feet away? I would, just because my eyes are old. And I think at that distance, with the video moving, the difference wouldn't be that noticeable.
Lots of things can affect how well something encodes in a particular codec, including the content. So maybe K-F should provide a sample of One Piece in Xvid and x264, so that people can see why they chose to make the switch.
I've seen a couple codec comparison sites, and to me, the differences from x264 aren't enough to make me want to switch just yet.
I went over to K-F's link, and the reason why they want to use x264:
Why did you decide to use X264?
This codec makes it much easier to make high quality encodes. Most people don't know this, but XviD often gives files which are too large because of the way it handles compression. I won't bore you with details, but if we set the target file sise to be 230MB, it may come out to be 240MB, which does not fit on a CD. This means we have to reencode with different compression settings. Using X264 will save us a lot of trouble.
this is quite embarrassing after releasing 160+ episodes they still don't know how to encode. on a side note, they must be one of the few groups left who still thinks people still use cdrs :hehe: but yeah that's kinda funny i think. cos normally groups don't give a fck about us viewers, doing oversized rips etc.
but oh well, i had the splitter already installed (because of some of my ichigomashimaro eps) and things do look more crisp. but i'm not someone to sit behind my desk to watch anime/movies, so I wouldn't notice anyway.
That paragraph from K-F makes it sound just like they just don't know how to calculate the encoding bitrate from the desired final size. It's actually pretty easy to do this, I wrote a perl script to do it for me so I don't even have to think about it.
they actually released ep.162 on both codecs (divx & x.264) and a lot of people complained that they couldnt see but just hear it, i had no problems watching with VLC but im just worried about burning  yeh i know so selfish of me, but it would take years until they release OP dvds here in the US.. i dont even know heheh how do you guys actually burn it with an mp4 file? or do i have to tweak with another program again.. using bitrate calculators.. i dont even know how those works.
i know they did a poll asking people if they should have a better quality and a lot of people voted for yes (not including me) but we didnt know theyre gonna change codecs, thats a lot of stress. :grumble:
i doubt theyre gonna read and understand a 1010000232934th million viewers' problems, theyre just gonna do whatever they want.

lol i feel the same way, i dont mind with oversized rips

Oops I didn't know that, thanks for the tip. OK, so I just d/l both versions of ep 162 and played some frames side by side (not fullscreen), and honestly, they are so close, I really can't tell the difference. When I view them fullscreen, I can't really tell much of a difference either, but it's harder for me to compare that way. Mayyybe there are less edge effects in the x264. Maybe. So I just ain't convinced it's worth it for people to use the bleeding edge yet.

I use the menconder program under Linux (I'm not a Windows person). That probably doesn't help does it?
finished watching maho senshi negima - its a cutsy tye anime... nothing to make it stand out from teh rest... just ur average anme... there are some funny eps though
Hehe, I've been in their irc channel for some time, there's so many people complaining about it. somehow I wanna ask them to do all the movies using their beloved x264 codec, cos the ones they released look bad (especially movie 1 - is all gooey, the others lack colors and are too dark.
Been watching Hana and Clover these past few days and its a real treat!
If you can get past some nuances like funny drawings from time to time, its pretty good. There's a nice mix of wacky comedy (especially with Hagu and Morita), romance and drama.
The story, as far as i know so far, is about art students... some of the scenes are rendered pretty good... and the bgms, the background music are very nice...
After I've finally given up hope on my ATI remote wonder (several buttons no longer work after several years of constant abuse :hehe:), I went back and used a very old x10 IR/RF remote control I had a long time ago. Since I cant use the ATI remote plugin for x10 and the boom software is crap, decided to use girder to configure all the stuff. Took me a while to set it up just the way i wanted it to with all the buttons i often use for zoom player, winamp, milkdrop and powerdvd. Then, made use of the cut scene editor on zoom player.
And the end result, uninterrupted viewing of Hana And Clover - no opening and no closing so its more like watching each episode seemlessly... hehehe (the video files are actually still in tact, the cut scene files only intruct zoom player to skip the first few minutes and the last few minutes).
i love honey and clover, Morita's my favorite, hes so random :hehe: i have the insert songs in my site if anyones interested. ;) sucks that the anime is over but cant wait for the live action movie next summer
