Watch it. I just jinxed myself.

Hehe, same here. The trick to effectively using a Linksys router is to not even use the firmware they gave you! You're better off getting new firmware using OSS alternatives like DD-WRT or OpenWRT.

Oh, and I picked up a $25 laptop yesterday off of craigslist. IBM Thinkpad i1200. Not bad, if I do say so myself. It has a Japanese keyboard which made it a definite keeper. :)

Cool. You can't beat a $25 laptop that still runs.

Dang, spend another weekend hacking away at my niece's laptop PC: her WinxP system somehow lost functionality on the USB ports, ethernet, wireless LAN, CD burner interface, etc... Couldn't back up any of her data except via floppies. :bleh:

After that tedious task, I tried reformatting the disc and reinstalling WinXP, but the CD that came with the laptop had no keycode label :grumble: , so I had to use HP/Compaq's "installation" CDs which installed a buncha crap on top of installing XP.

What a pain... I shoulda just installed my copy Win2K.

Now I hate laptops even more. :cursing:

How old is the laptop?

Actually, send me all the details and I'll see what I can do.

About three years old.

No need.

I was able to get the fresh install done, less all of the XP patches and stuff... All the interefaces seem to be okay now.

Her OS must've gotten corrupted by a virus or similar.

Thanks for the offer. :)

Cool. In the future, if any HP product goes south and you think it's worth the trouble, let me know. ;)

Okay. Thanks.

Any idea why there was no keycode provided with the XP disc?

I can't help but think that the installation is some tweaked/abbreviated copy of XP Pro... With a lotta castrated software included (Norton Antivirus, MSMoney, Quicken, WinDVD, etc.)...

It's usually never printed on the disc, but there should be a sticker on the box that has the product key.

Computers mostly come with XP Home. And you know that the day they stop including these programs is the day people will wonder where to get them. ;) Gotta build for the lowest common denominator.

Oh.

Didn't see any kinda label on the laptop either.... It'd be sorta odd to stick that info on the laptop, ne? :headscratch:

All computer manufacturers (OEMs) still the label on the case somewhere, usually in the back or underside of the case.

@M. Murphy: Have you contacted HP Support yet? And if so, were you satisfied with the outcome?

So desu.

Can't recall looking at the bottom of her laptop. :headscratch:

Oh well, it's done for now... We'll see how long she can keep the thing going this time. ;)

Yup, in fact if you see an OEM copy of Windows in the store (Fry's sells it, and other smaller computer stores), the sticker you are supposed to attach to the computer is somewhere in the manual.

Yeah.. I called them before. They gave me a patch for it. It worked, for a while.. then it didn't... they said if the problem persists, I'd have to ship over the laptop before warranty runs out...

as for the screen.. circuit city will take care of it.. meaning.. I'd have to ship it to them after shipping it to compaq.

damn bastards.
