With any laptop, he should consider getting an extended warranty. :)

BMW, were you able to install the DSL?

Not yet.

Verizon's "support" isn't: they sent out a tech to my house yesterday and I was at work... They were supposed to call first. :shakehead:

Looks like I'm taking tomorrow off to sit and wait for the homer, er, technician. *has flashbacks of last year's FedEx fiasco*

Huh, when I had DSL, they (SBC) set up my line beforehand and all I had to do was to hook up the modem they sent me. I then installed something that walked me through the installation/registration process.

Exactly...that's how it was for me. They activated the DSL line, i threw in the modem...and some software requirements...and voila....

I'd call and MAKE sure you've been plugged into the system.. they forgot to do mine, so i never got the Carrier-ATM signal... took the dummies a week to figure it out, and 3 tech calls to check my phone line outside, inside the house and one at the corner box.

Well SUPPOSEDLY they did that, since they asked me to leave my DSL modem on and connected.

They're dopes.

just curious how fast is this DSL supposed to be? because it's my understanding that Verizon licenses its DSL carrier lines from AT&T (formerly SBC Communications)

It appears they a three different plans now:

1. baseline goes up to 768Kb/sec
2. midlevel goes up to 1.5Mb/sec
3. high speed goes up to 3.0 Mb/sec...

i hope you're at least going for the midlevel one...otherwise your expectations of performance may be unfulfilled.

this isn't a dig or anything but il don't know why they offer such a low range of speeds....most carriers that i know of, offer over 1.5Mb/sec on up to 6.0Mb/sec or significantly higher. :headscratch:

that's what they told me too.. except the "phone company" guys didn't do it "physically"... odd, cause i was talking to the SBC tech. :headscratch:

Got me.

Another couple of days of getting jerked and I'm gonna pull the plug... So to speak. :grumble:

Not that's odd...the fact that the speed of the connection wasn't discussed?

Bah. In Australia the govornment-owned telco Telstra has put an artificial cap on ADSL connections. Fastest available is 1.5MB, with the bottom line service at 256kb/s. If the artificial cap was removed, the fastest possible service would be 8MB/s. However privately-owned telcos are putting their own equipment and offering what they call ADSL2+ - up to 24MB/s! But of course they are not doing all exchanges, only the ones in densely populated areas first (i.e. cities). My work will be getting ADSL2+ next year when the exchange nearby is done (can't wait to try that out) but my home exchange isn't likely to be done for a few years :(

how unfortunate for an advanced, civilized society/nation such as Australia
