It wouldn't really save that much because the drive is always spinning when your PC is on... The motor bearing of the HD is probably is biggest wear and tear item in a drive.
Not sure if external drives have some kinda power down mode when not in use for long periods... They also have slower data transfer rates than internal drives...
That's good to know. Thanks. I guess extra space for downloading is my only criteria now. So it's a toss-up between an internal or one of those Western Digital "My Book" externals.
I bought a 1G ram stick today, opened up my comp, removed the 512MB stick, put in the new one, closed it up and turned it on. It went on for a second or 2, then shut off, and now it won't boot :( No power light, nothing.
So I think the motherboard or PS is fried :( I tried putting the old ram stick back, but it made no difference :(

You did buy the correct RAM module for your PC, ne?
No beep tones at all?
Try resetting the CMOS by moving that jumper on the motherboard...
Anime Dad wrote:No, that was the problem. I realised later that the original ram was DDR400, the new one was DDR667 :banghead: I'm so stupid :banghead:
That shouldn't toast the PC...
It's just a faster DDR, ne?
Give your system time to settle and try booting with the old module.
I thought so too, but when I pulled the 667 out and compared it to the 400, the notch is in a very slightly different spot.. I don't know how I managed to get it in.

I had that problem once after putting in a ram stick incorrectly... not completely seated before I turned it on. It fizzled for a moment then nothing.... waited 15 minutes ... tried to turn it on... nothing. Finally I read the manual... It actually had that problem in there. The resolution, unplug from wall.... wait for a while. Plug back into wall and computer had a new life. I suppose there is some capacitor that can't release it's energy until all power sources are removed. :bonk:
As the resolution of digital cameras increases, memory cards with larger capacity are needed. Evergreen has released a 16G SDHC memory card with high-speed writing and reading access (class 6). You don't have to worry about memory capacity anymore and can take photos and videos with your high-spec camera as much as you want.

Anyone here have experience with a Seagate Barracuda Ultra ATA/100 internal HD? Looks to be an inexpensive, fast(7200RPM) option if it's reliable. Will it work with the IDE/EIDE internals of a Dell Dimension 4100?

I think most of the name brands are fine and Seagate is one of the best, I think.
It *shouldn't* have a problem with your Dell, but you never can tell with some Dell products *not a fan of Dell*....
