Well it's good that you decided to use a third party option then huh? Can't even trust Windows. I use WinPatrol and it's great! :victory:

Seriously...I kept disablling the Nvidia control panel from starting up by de-selecting it from the msconfig utility and the piece of crap would still load...I was like WTF!!! Especially after I figured out the culprit. But as you say, thank goodness something worked even if it wasn't native to Windows XP.
I really have to make it a point not to let anymore new processes load at Startup....like I said it's usually bad news.
I've dealt with NVidia before and always opted to not install that option. Seemed pretty useless to me.
I've had that happen before with MSCONFIG also. You disable and it recreates itself, so effectively you have two in there; one enabled and one not. It's pretty freaking annoying. Sometimes software devs tell you to go to your start up folder and remove it out of there, but that isn't always reliable. Here's the link to WinPatrol if you want it: http://www.winpatrol.com/ Whenever a new startup process is added, it asks you if you want to allow it. Basically allows you to have a lot more control over what is happening with your computer.
Side note: Only problem with denying Startup rights to a process with WinPatrol is during installations. If you do it, it can end the installation which is a pain in the ass. It's best to allow it temporarily and then go in and disable it yourself.
Lol, now that I'm done advertising some software. I figured it might be easier than Spybot for management since it has the notifications.

atskv9 wrote:Could you explain this one to me? I am confused since I always try to minimize startup processes and it leads to faster boot times, for me atleast.
On my PCs I use a program called Start Manager which lets me see AND edit what kinda crap is loaded when Windows starts up...
Apparently any software you install will semi-secretly plop other non-essential programs into your Startup, if you're not paying attention... That's why I typically do a custom install of software and NEVER let the software do a typical installation which inserts this kind junk into your Windows startup...
I use similar software as well. I basically advertised it above :bonk: Customs installations are definitely the way to go. I almost always install the minimal. If only everyone else in the world knew this... but if they did, where would all the tech support jobs go? :beaten:

Haha...the wonders of technology. :P
LOL!
I've had to resort to registry hacking in the past to stop programs loading at startup.

It's ridiculous to have to do so, but I don't doubt you in the least. Poor programming abounds.

I agree. I'm a lot more selective about what I put on my comp nowadays.
(when it's working) :bonk:

Lol, story of my life :puppydog:
If I leave mine on too long, it blue screens due to some socket connection error :banghead:

Mine was working fine, until I tried upgrading the RAM :banghead:

I'm still wondering how you managed to jam a module that has a different key slot into your PC...

Me too. :(
I have an old comp up and running for the moment: a very old PII/400. I got sick of Win 98 crashing, so i've installed Win XP. Surprisingly, it runs not too bad, considering it has only 192MB ram :bonk: Only problem is, the HD is only 6G. Time to scour my house for a larger one for storage :beaten:
